Stupid VBR problems

I've been trying to catch up to you video gurus, but i'm still in the dust.

I wanted to create a DVD out of six different 25 minute .AVI clips, so I tried merging them with nandub, and then virtualdub. Both had the same problems when I tried to append the .AVI segments. My jackass friend encoded these in variable bit rates for the audio and video, and i'm not sure how to alleviate the problem.

Is there any way to change the files' bit rate, or continue to put them onto the same DVD as different files?

if it helps, the bitrates are like this:
1. Audio: 125 kbps Video: 166 kbps
2. Audio: 128 kbps Video: 166 kbps
3. Audio: 141 kbps Video: 168 kbps
4. Audio: 145 kbps Video: 169 kbps
5. Audio: 150 kbps Video: 169 kbps
6. Audio: 150 kbps Video: 169 kbps

they all are running at 23 frames/second and the sample size is 24 bit.

this thing will be a christmas present (yes, i'm broke) so there is a bit of urgency factored in. thanks for the help!

EDIT: sorry, forgot to add, they're animations, if that makes any difference.

VBR is good, 24-bit is bad though. Means he converted to RGB24 whilst encoding.

Joining VBR shouldn't be a problem. Fact is that if you are going to re-encode there is no point in joining. You can use AVISynth to frameserve as one file. Probably make more sense to encode/author each as a separate title though.

thanks for the input, but I don't think I really explained my problem very well, focusing on variable bit rate. I really only have a vague idea of what i'm doing, but when I got the error message from virtualdub, it said "cannot append segments: the audio streams have different data formats."

I really don't know if that has anything to do with VBR.

I did run it through gspot, which said the codec was, as following:
0x00ff: unknown for both of the files.

any input, that would be great, i'm going to screw with AVISynth for a while.

welcome to the forum

it will probably be easier to encode each to mpeg2 first, then join and/or author to dvd
