    Aspect Ratio confusion

Hi. I have an avi file with a 16:9 (576x320) resolution. I would like to copy ths onto my Archos AV480 and watch it on my widescreen PAL TV in full screen. If I copy the file over at 576x320 I get a letterbox effect, which I guess is down to the way the TV stretches the width. Is there an faq or can someone advise me on how to calculate the appropriate screen aspect ratio for such an avi so it displays full screen on the TV?

I apologise if this has already been covered elsewhere. I did search the forums but could not find an answer. Many thanks.

Seach the aspect andI think you'll find your answer.

    Edit:

Talk about DVD authoring and editing, including support tools such as PgcEdit, MenuShrink...

If the TV is widescreen, and your DVD player is set up right, it should fill the screen.

Try a program like DivX2DVD and use force aspect ratio to 16:9 (and force PAL)

Depends on whether the ratio is 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 which will fill the screen .... but if the ratio is 2.35 or higher 2.40, etc then you will have horiz black bars unless you use the ZOOM feature of your WS TV, which will chop off the sides.

        Regards

          Well that's gonna happen anyway.

Even widescreen studio DVDs do that.

Thanks but I couldn't see anything that helped here or perhaps I just missed it.

Thanks for the reply but I'm not asking about DVD playback. The AV480 is just a portable media player which I want to use to play back the avi file through my TV.

Fact remains that the file is ~1.7778 so if the player and TV are setup properly then it should fill the screen.

                576/320=1.8

Probably the AV480 is outputting 4:3 which is letterboxed, then the TV stretches that horizontally to fill 16:9. Had the same problem with mplayer before I set the AR.

Try resizing to 576x432. That would make it 4:3, so that when the TV stretched to fill 16:9, it would actually end up 16:9. Better to have things setup properly though.
