Yes... but WHY!

Could someone please tell me - in the simplest possible terms - why DVDs in the drive, or video files saved to hard drive folder - need 'converting' ?

There are different video file types - yes - but how do you know that what you have needs 'converting'? If I've got VOB files WHY would I think they need 'converting'?

convert for what? ipod? dvd player? plain vobs will need ifo and bup files to make a proper dvd. what are you doing?
