Longevity of DVD's stored on HD?

I am wanting to take my 200+ DVD's and back them up on an external hard drive or 2.

Can someone tell me how long these movies will last a HD? How easy will it be to burn the movies to a disk when I want to watch one, and how safe is this situation overall? I will be selling my DVD's after they are backep up, that is why I wonder how safe it is.
