need help with mpg file

hi i am a newbie to video editing, i am hoping someone can help me. Recently i got a pvr, from which i can transfer the file using pvrs software which also converts it into mpg using codec (Elecard/Moonlight MPEG-2 A/V decoder codec) and i can play it. But the problem is the time line. For example if i have a hour long mpeg on windows media player time line shows 10 mins. When it goes to the end of 10 mins it just continues to play the file. I have tried different software all are the same. The reason i need the time line to be fixed is so when i use ultra video splitter or boilsoft splitter or winavi splitter it will work properly. With timeline screwed up lets say i choose to split a 30 mins segment of the video it only does 5 mins of it. The closest i came to fixing this problem is by using virtualdub where i conver the mpg into avi, which worked then the video was lagging relative to audio. I know its a long winded question but any help is appreciated.

Not sure if this is your problem, but when I was recording VHS to my computer, I found that the naming of the files is of the utmost importance.

This is what I saw. File name test, 1st time, recorded 10 min. timeline showed 10 min., over write test, 30 min, would only show 10 min.

You might try not over writing the files and see if this helps.

Lets us know, because someone else may be having an issue, and if this helps, it may help others.

a freeware method would be to download ProjectX, run the mpg through it. it will demux all streams within the file and fix any errors. you can then mux back to an mpeg ps with Imagompeg-muxer.

or for something easier (but commercial), try VideoRedo's quickstream fix function

First of all thank for takin the time and replying back. I fixed the time issue, i had to had the codec Elecard/Moonlight MPEG-2 A/V decoder codec installed. It doesn't work with any other codec. i got the trial version. Now the problem i am having is video not matching with audio. I am getting the files from my pvr. On the pvr there is an option called overtime. Meaning lets say i setup up recording up to 9:50 it will actually record up to 9:55. I had back to back recording on programs so i think programs had overlapped. I shut the overtime option off lets c wat happens.. Any suggestion if the overlapped file can be fixed?
