Problems shrinking downloaded movies with dvdshrink...

I arrived here after downloading dvdshrink to resize downloaded movies from limewire so I can burn them with nero. I first downloaded the free version of dvdsanta and it did work but I am not wanting to pay for dvdsanta to get rid of the advertisement on the finished burn project. I was directed to dvdshrink but I am confused on how to get the files into the program to shrink them. Evidently the dvdshrink will not work with avi, mpg, mpeg and so on. How do I get the moive files into dvdshrink to reduce the size of them or is it even possible?
