I would rather have the samsung 203B but it doesn't come with nero software, however there's a big if, it doesn't like some southbridge sata chipset controllers. All in all I would avoid sata dvd burners for a while.

      Hi folks,

@ NT ... Thanks for the tip on leaving "plenty" of time between the burns ... I was not watching that little advice ... I was just using it like it is no tomorrow.

chewy thnx for that link to that lite-on in newegg w/the free nero essential and cable. i got it. but like you said DellHell. the tech at dell forgot to tell me i needed an adaptor to hook up the power supply cable to the burner. so tues should be a new day w/burning.

also is it better to wait until i hook up the lite-on before installing the free nero? i know it works w/burners n readers and don't want to install it to find out it can't install because there's no burner detected.

surely you have 2 sata power connectors in that computer?

you might think about upgrading your power supply soon if you have added too many drives that you need adapters

chewy dell told me that i had 2 sata power connectors. my hard drive they said was connected to one and my writer to the other. my dvd-rom as per dell is connected to the ide. they told me that i could hook up a new burner to one of the p3 or p5 power supply cables, but i couldn't. the extra p5 that was there is connected to the hard drive and is there just in case i want an extra hard drive. the available power supply cable was a p7 and i couldn't connect that to the lite-on. i needed to order an adapter from newegg. so i just have my 1 hard drive and my dvd-rom and now the new lite-on burner. i replaced the lg writer that came w/my dell. it's just not connected yet. hence the adapter. afaik i think dell messed up w/my order when i purchased my pc. either that or like you said dell hell. i'm gonna contact them again. if they messed up then i have a new pc coming. in any case let me know what you make of this info i'll appreciate it. thnx.

chewy i'm going to note this link. thnx as usual, and check this out. dell did send me the wrong pc. thnx to you guys and the forum and me inquiring about a new burner, when i went to install the lite-on you recommended i noticed the motherboard wasn't the one i purchased. they had to replace it about a week or so after i purchased my pc and it either never came with it from the get go, or they replaced the damaged board w/a wrong one. now they have to give me a new sata mother board w/2 ports at least. i'm not stopping there. compensation for a year of working w/the wrong pc might include two sata readers/burners. the ones i had were ide's. not bad cause they were lg's but sata's the way to go. can you suggest some components that would upgrade my pc to work faster and better and more efficient? ie: processor, how much ram? storage space, dma... etc. etc. it doesn't have to be totally high end, but better than what i have.

Dell dimension e310 series, intel pentium 4 processor 521 (2.80GHz) and 1mb cache

                        512MB ddr2 sdram at 533mhz. etc. etc.

my 2 drives are by lg. both ide's. the reader's great but if i can get a sata from them it'll be better. it makes sense since my pc suppose to come w/2 sata ports anyway. i'm pushing the envelope for a third.

note: I am not crazy about sata burners, there are still too many problems, it's a gamble

intel is still the only chipset maker that fully implemented support for them and I am not so sure about Intel?

all my computers have 2 ide's, newer ones only have 1

                          good luck on your negotiations

thnx chewy. i straightened everything out. it was a misinformed description of my pc and the mother board that was depicted in the e310 diagram. some mother boards have their sata ports in different locations even though you have the correct one. i'll try out that lite-on and if anything i'll just exchange it through newegg for an ide. experience is the best teacher. i'll be back w/my experience w/a new burner. i'm slow sometimes, but i get there eventually.

                              new sata burner:

hi fellas, i'm back w/some feedback on the sata Lite-ON DVD RW LH-20A1L (BL04) . burns great, but it sounds like an airplane on take-off then it mellows out. is this common w/lite-ons in general? nero has some settings on driver speeds would that help? it's connected to the power cable extension from my LG dvd-rom and the sata cable is connected to the sata port. would it be better off being connected to a separate power cable?
