nighttran good to hear from you. yeh it did it when i forgot to adjust the burn setting to 8 the first time. it was set to max. it still took off like a jet at 8 though and then settled down. does the way i have it connected have anything to do w/it? chewy did suggest to stick w/ide's for now also. what's your take on the sata burners?

I never have it but I read that not many have good satisfaction on them, if you burn at 4x should hear no sound at all then that is is normal 8x + you will hear sound more then another from dif burners

trans your right. it went smoother on 8x. i haven't tried 4x yet. makes only sense it'll be quieter. i still have about 20 or so days left to return/or exchange this sata lite-on. if i'm not satisfied i'll just get an ide.

let me ask is it a better choice to get a burner which also reads well instead of a straight out dvd-rom? the readers alone are so inexpensive one could snatch 2 or 3 at a time.

all my computers have 2 ide's, newer ones only have 1

          good luck on your negotiations
But you would still recommend this one wouldn't you ? I am seriously thinking of ordering it sometime next week

Most people that get the new samsung say it's the best burner they have used, but a few are getting lemons, it's a crapshoot?

trans your righton burning at 4 times w/the lite-on. it's doing just fine over all. there was this one source i had problems burning and thought it had to do w/1 of my apps. or the source itself. even wondered if the burner was defective. but i tried it on 4x and it burned real smooth. less noise also like you said. i'm happy w/it so far.

hi guys my sata lite-on DVD RW LH-20 A1L- too many coasters at 8x and above. 4x no problem so far. not too happy right now. though 4x mostly gives good quality burns, i don't think asking it for 8x is too much. my dell oem lg ide had no problems at 8x, or above.

as of now i'm sending it back to newegg for an exchange. any replies and/or suggestions always welcomed as usual.

IMO 8x should be an optimal burn speed or damn close with the new burners. Unless there is another issue causing these problems, I would send it back and try something else.

yeh i just read some reviews on this sata LH-20A1L. bad writing performance on most media except some of the big names like taiyu and verbatim. overall not that great. experience best teacher. i'll always do research from now on.

chewy i can't argue w/you about not too much info on satas. you're right my ide was better believe me. thing is i read some reviews on current ide's and they weren't that great either.

anyhow if you or any of the fellas have some suggestions on some ide's out there, post them please. i'm packing this sata up today. i don't recommend it at all unless you want to deal w/coasters and errors and limit yourself to certain media.
