i see you guys are active tonight. where's my best bet to go see what ide's are available out there that would for the most part burn most dvd media blanks? i've checked out newegg, but they seem to be going towards sata. i use sony blanks for the most part and they're fairly good as noted here in the forum. that lite-on sata i returned had issues w/it. throw me a link or anything to work with. appreciated as always.

p.s. you guys lucked out as you all for the most part have great ide burners that are not available no more, or at least i haven't run across any.

hi tran. i tried comp usa. they had nothing on benqs. if that's the case then all you fellas got lucky w/all the benqs, lg's, pioneers, etc,, the newer satas and even the ide's have a lot off issues.. if you find anything on benqs let me know.

fellas, i know from the forum and elsewhere that the better blank media are verbatim and taiyu ruden. do you let this fact influence the burners you purchase? most of the reviews on some of the newer burners posts logs w/many different blank media, but they all for the most part always have verbatim and taiyu on the list and w/burning results that sometimes demonstrate the best data in reference to the burner. i prefer to not be pigeoned hole to one blank source as i like to have the freedom of buying w/e as long as it's not totally garbage.

on that note give me some feed back on these models i've been checking out.

the top 3 should be fine with a wide assortment of media

the plex is a crossbrand(nec) and will also do it, but why pay extra for an nec, just buy the nec instead

                Hi folks,

@ Chewy ... if you had to pick one of the top 3 as you mentioned and had to use the following criteria ... which would you pick ...

                1) To be able to burn any dvd blanks in tier 1 (Verbs or Taiyo) or tier 2 (MCC or ...) even tier 3 and so forth AND NO COASTERS.

                2) So it can Read any DVD as long as the dvd is not totally scratched ...

                3) a Dependable Work Horse.

                4) The manufacturer provides timely Firmware upgrades ... that are help meaningful and helpful (This last CRITERIA ... it is a Goodie ... and NOT a Requirement)

To me Burning speed faster than 12X (really 8X) for DVDs and 36X (really 24X) for CDs it makes no sense.

Hopefully this will help dr_ml with his decision.

                Thanks,

                G!

nec/optiarc aren't as popular anymore, have you ordered anything yet, how are the burns turning out?

thnx chewy. no i haven't ordered anything. been lil hesitant since returning that sata 20x lite-on. i'm seriously considering that lg gsa h54nk. not only for the price but also for its reviews.

$$$ not a factor if getting a burner that's good & compatible w/most media. really only use sony blank media now, but will get w/verbatim or taiyu ruden now that i see they have specials every now & then on newegg...

the first 3 above all have good reps. i'm not sold too much on the pioneer though w/that lcd compensator.

I would pull that dvd-rom drive out and get a scanning drive(good all round drive)
the pioneer is probably best for dual layer

can the pioneer scan? or are you suggesting a scanning drive along w/the pioneer? how do you feel about that lcd compensator? you know they're still working on getting lcd right. it's like the conversion from ide to sata, not too much on it to completely throw oneself into it.

if your lg is still working ok? then I wouldn't go with the pioneer, the pioneer is a bad scanner, the lg's are not even capable of scanning

                              Very bad at 20x
Reviewed By: zg on 10/18/2007 Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
Pros: Does a good job below 20x on most media.
Cons: Only works at 20x on a few types of media (like 16x TY) and does an awful job with it. Mountains of PIFs at the edge of every 20x burn. I bought it for 20x. RMA time.
Other Thoughts: Maybe future firmware will fix the 20x problems. Maybe not. Maybe my unit was a defect. Maybe not.
you can't go on newegg reviews alone

chewy i get it. some burners just burn. this pioneer is a burner. i would have to get an all around drive in addition to the pioneer should i go w/it.

it says on its specs that it could read dvd-rom at 16x and cd-rom at 40x. does this mean it can read dvd-r, dvd-rw, etc.. i don't know if -rom is totally different format? if it is a totally different format what kind of discs are they talking about?
