dvd-rom usually refers to dual layer factory disks, however that 16x usually refers to single layer as most drives have issues reading dual layer that fast

all newer drives read burned disks

the pioneer and samsung would make a good combination

did you give me that link to the samsung just to point out the review on newegg? all the burners i listed are all 18x burners. this samsung on the link is 20x. i've looked around for reviews elsewhere on the ones i posted. very few and far in between. think most review sites are concentrating are more recent models. my dell lg oem rom is still working fine. i'm mainly looking for a new burner. as you suggested though a good all round burner would be fine. are all samsungs capable of scanning? if so i would like to look into an 18x ide. i'm going to check out the specs on the samsung 18x ide i posted.

the 182 is long gone, the 183 recently gone

        you snooze you loze

sure you can buy them from second rate places and pay a premium, they are old stock

samsung has had some issues with quality control recently, it's a crap shoot, but newer burners are better, if you get a good one

unfortunately all other companies have the same problem or worse

the pioneer might change, but I doubt it, they have kept the same hardware and just tweaked the firmware for quite some time, might want to see if they put it on free shipping at newegg

that 6$ off makes the deal

thnx chewy. i'm not too concerned right now w/the pioneer's scanning features. as a burner w/most media sources is it a good catch? i'll just keep my dell oem lg reader and burn w/the pioneer. if i take a chance on waiting for free shipping i might lose out. it seems like a pretty good deal now. i just don't have experience w/the different burners out there period. that's why all input i get is great. plus it's an ide and it looks like sata's going to be more the norm soon.

i'm kinda stuck w/this whole burner thing. looks like i came at a time of transition. what 1 has the other doesn't. vice versa. being that they all have issues which ones have been predominantly in the forefront?

the pioneer is probably best for dual layer

you will want a better computer sooner or later
stay away from factory built entry level ones

an entry level computer doesn't allow a lot of upgrading potential

you might want another hard drive for that computer some day, video work takes a lot of space, your one free sata should be reserved for that

gonwk thnx, but i already had the sata version of that lite-on. coasters like crazy. problems burning at 8x. i sent it back.

i pulled the trigger a lil while ago on the samsung sata that was first recommended by chewy and although a sata, it seems to be the wisest choice as per some members here and also seperate reviews elsewhere.

gotta start somewhere. consider yourself and the rest of the gang priviledged to have come along when benqs and all the other mainstays were around.

i guess from here on i'll be part of the new generation of burner connoseurs.

thnx chewy. i'm gonna make the best out of this e-310. burn it to the ground. later after some more experience like you suggested, i'll get as much info as possible and send to build my own computer. it's gonna be my exclusive burn station.

I have a bad feeling about that sata, the new one coming and the other rma'd

call dell, raise heck about the last one not working, find out what they reccomend for using a sata, system changes, bios updates etc

I don't like the power connectors either

chewy, i spoke several times w/these so called "techs". i told them that the specs on this link don't even match what i have inside my tower. they had to change the mother board about 3 days after i bought this pc and they replaced it w/1 that has a totally different set up. they said some boards may look different but that it's ok that they're different, that they configure boards differently but they still perform and have same features as in my invoice. you see where the sata ports are in the link above. mine are next to the power supply unit all the way on the other side. i remember when the tech came w/the new board. i saw it said refurbished. he told me that since dell doesn't make the boards that they have to be labeled that way, but that they're not refurbished. what you think? me i think they're full of it. they offered me a new board about 2 mos. ago. or a replacement i guess. as a suggestion do you think i should get back to them and get a new one? i already discussed the power supply unit in my other thread. br7 had same issues. had to get adapters or connectors.

as far as the burners it's definitely a crapshoot, but the samsung for the most part seems like the better of the lot right now.

                                1 x 12V(P4)

hi chewy. this power unit's on sale right now. would it complement my dell e-310 well? would the amps on the rails be good enough for my pc and the burners, hdd, etc..?

btw i ended up getting exactly what you recommended a couple of mos. ago. the pioneer 112d and the samsung sh-s203b. they do work well together. i'm hard headed. what can i say.
