I didn't reccomend the 2 sticks of ram for the reason is you have already committed the cardinal sin, you bought a dell

those sticks would run on a "standard" motherboard at the lower/faster cas levels

on a dell who knows, the gamble/loss/gain is all yours, cowboy up or wuss out

it's all your choice, not mine

If it was mine I would take the gamble but then I would probably find a computer sooner or later to use them in if the dell didn't like them

i hear you loud n clear. by cas do you mean content addressable storage, or code access security? just curious. also what's the recommended course of action in regards to a build? is there a beginner's guide, or whatever that one should check out? i'm going to have to learn what all the parts do, and then some, and also need your help along the way.

i'm not putting anything in here. had enuff headaches as you know also. most i'd do is just keep burning and use the software i have now, or some new one to burn with.

The next thing you should be aware of when buying RAM are the memory timings, also known as latencies. The most well-known memory timing is the CAS latency ("collumn address strobe" - sometimes shortened to CL). Out of all the memory timings, this one is the most forgiving and can have a decent impact on overall performance (which is why it's the most well-known). Common CAS latency for DDR RAM is 3, with 2.5 and 2 being better and better. The "total package" of memory timings will be listed like this (example latencies here): 2.5-3-3-6-2T. The first one is always CAS, then comes tRCD ("RAS-to-CAS delay"), then tRP ("RAS precharge"), then tRAS ("active to precharge"), and finally the "command rate" (or "command time"). Unless you're really into OC'ing, you only need to pay attention to the CAS latency, and just know that for DDR RAM, the rest of the timings on average should be 3-3-6-2T. For DDR2 RAM, the average timings (including CAS latency) are 4-4-4-8-2T, although you can now get sticks of DDR2 with CL's as low as 2.

how is the lg jumpered? what position on the cable?

hi chewy. now that i look back i now realize that maybe, just maybe, the issue w/the pioneer might have to do w/it being hooked up as master, or slave. i didn't think about this at the time, and you asking me how the lg is jumpered, i wasn't sure what you really meant. did you mean the master, or slave hook up?

i went to your post on that link. i'm the 1 w/a sata hard drive that shouldn't worry. that being said, i only have 1 ide cable 4 two ide burners. it comes w/a split so that the master can hook up 2 the slave. dell hell your right, cause i have no idea how the hell the bios can show up w/a master, and slave on 1 ide cable. i won't have my answers concerning the pioneer 112d until i get it back, and hook it up under different settings, slave, or master. the 112d did read and burn dvds though. cds were issue. so lets see what pioneer sends me back.

right now my sata samsung is on ultra 5 dma. the lg +-rw i put in until the pioneer comes back reports ultra 2 dma. that i saw through device manager. the lg is also hooked as master on the ide cable. dma can't b adjusted through bios right? i reset it the last time through the thread on dma here in the forum. bios justs shows that it's enabled? or do u consider device manager part of bios? you're right on the money when you pointed out about all the pcs coming out including dell hell. the bios on this pc reports a secondary ide channel when there is none. tech at dell says that's how bios comes cause some mobos support secondary channel. doesn't apply to my pc so don't see any use 4 it, especially as it won't make sense upgrading this pc anyway.

a lot of people are reporting different issues with the newer pioneer drives

when you return one it seems likely you'll get another from the same bad batch

that's a shame cause they seemed to have their act together for quite a while

that's what i figured, and i have to wait on the recall to find out. i've already had a great experience w/the sata samsung, so maybe i might go w/an ide one. but there haven't been any reviews really on them. i checked out the samsung 18x ide on newegg, but didn't see a review. i could also b mistakeing it 4 a 20x ide, but no review. at this point the reviews seem too b of lil consolation anyway as different burners are working differently w/different users.

btw i turned my hyperthreading on in bios. it was off. my processor supports it so i turned it on. i also changed the bios on acoustic to performance. it was set to bypass. the ide drive i have isn't too old so i set it to performance. there shouldn't b any issues w/these changes that you anticipate do you?

hi chewy. i'm going to get that extra hd 4 video work. the 1 i have now is the WDC WD800JD-75MSA3 that came w/my e310 from dell hell. what hd would you recommend that would agree w/my pc, and the mobo etc... guess we're talking at least 500gb storage or less?

btw i pulled the trigger on a 20x samsung ide from newegg. so that extra sata port will b open 4 the hdd.

I don't encourage keeping 100's of gigs of data on ahard drive, too risky and impossible to defrag. A 250 gig seagate would probably be my favorite.

cool. the specs on it would say what systems, etc... it would b compatible w/? there's not too much too look out 4 when it comes 2 hds? 1st time w/this. not easy like snatching a burner.

seagate for the warranty
cache would be nice but not as important for a data drive as an OS one
just go by good reviews

you'll know if you have to set a jumper for sata 1 after you hook it up, get sata 2 anyway
