16:9 AVI with Virtualdub

Compressing with Virtualdub I can not get an avi widscreen although starting with one. All I get is a square screen. Why?

What compression codec are you using? Did you use a resize filter or perhaps some codec setting to resize the video?

Thank you for your help. I use Intel Indeo and I managed to do a 16:9 out with a filter. Why do I have to, providing a 16:9 AVI at the income?
Also the AVI out is not exactly 16:9 due to "multiple of two" limitation that all codec I have has...
by the way, I do have to encode, because I´m subtitling.
