First of all you have to realize that you are going to loose some quality. The object is to limit that loss. What prog are you using to create the svcd?

Try DVD2SVCD. With this program you can encode with either tmpg or CCE. Most people agree that CCE in 3 or 4 pass mode gives better results. BUT CCE is very picky and can lock up easily. If you system is stable, i'm sure you will find you like the results better.

DVD2SVCD also automates the entire process and divides the svcd up into seperate discs so you don't have to split for yourself. You simply burn each file to seperate cds.

Nero is my choice for burning. Stay away from Roxio Easy CD Creator. Many people (including myself) have had problems getting the cds to play on standalone players.

Also get the program called daemon tools, it creates a virtual cd rom drive on your system and allows you to mount the files that DVD2SVCD creates. By doing this you can preview the svcd prior to burning. You also can simply perform a disc copy from the virtual cd rom to your rom burner and don't have to mess with any of nero's svcd settings.
