from what I read as windows xp developed they tried to get the bugs out of crappy dv cam's implementation of streaming/capture, the original firewire/ilink is all that passed the test and is still supported

buy a TI chipset firewire card

and then plug the camera directly into that via what type of cable? The only way to connect the camera to the pc is via the usb socket on the camera. It has no other jacks /sockets apart from svideo.

You're right, it's the dc in jack which doubles as iLink. Who'd have thought?

          Thanks for your input guys.

Are you sure it is DC in and not DV IN/OUT ? I seriously doubt that the DC power port and DV port should be the same.

Its quite possible that you have a damaged port on the camera itself. This was a common problem when connecting the camera to usb ports due to the usb port having voltages on the connections and plugging the camera into that port while it is turned on. The two voltages would "clash" and surge the data lines. The result would be that the UART chip inside the camera would be damaged by the two independant voltages clashing when plugged in.

To avoid this from happening, it is recommended that the camera be turned off when plugging into the usb or i-Link ports on the PC. Then turn on the camera. Newer cameras incorporate protection diodes to prevent these voltage clashes so that the camera can be on while plugging it in. Tho the protection diodes are there, its still a good idea to not turn on the camera until after it is plugged into the pc no matter which type of interface is used.

If you have tried different interface cables and different ports, chances are good that the UART chip is bad. There is a small board behind the cover that has this interface chip. The chip is a VLSI style surface mount chip that cant be replaced by itself. It is best to replace the whole board. I am not sure if the new replacement boards incorporate the protection diodes but just in case the new one doesnt, make sure the camera is turned off before plugging it into the pc.

Yes its always good to make sure your plugging into the correct port. Sony really goofed up by combining the DC and i-Link plugs and/or making them use the same style of plug. Very very goofy!

                Here..I will fix it!

Ta, but this is just a bit TMI.

I don't want to dick about poppin' chips and boards . I'll get obi when he pops by, or maybe a firewire card or summat.
