Convert TV recording to DVD by computer?

Hi, Newbie here. I'm not sure where to post so bear with me please. I recorded a movie on TV with my DVD recorder and want to send a copy to a soldier in Iraq that he can play on his laptop. How do I do the copying with my computer? I have a DVD-RW in my computer and use Nero SmartStart 6.6 I tried using DVD Shrink and FabDecrypter but it stops in a few minutes with a "failed" message. The movie name doesn't show up in these programs, just "JVC_DVD_ROM_PVD"
I hope I've given enough information to get a reply.
    Thanks,
    Jody

    welcome to the forum

    what is your dvd recorder(standalone)?

what format are you recording in? are you finalizing the disk after recording?

Does the recording play in another standalone player or computer?

      Recorded brand

Thanks for responding! My DVD recorder is a JVC DR-M100 and yes, I do finalize the disks when I'm done. They will play in other brand players, I also have an Apex. Sorry, son't know what format it's recorded in. Is there a way to tell?
      Thanks again,
      Jody

          DVD blanks

The DVD blanks are Verbatim 4.7GB 16X. However, I just discovered they won't play in my computer using either the DVD-RW drive or the DVD drive. I have a Dell Dimension E521 with standard factory drives. I guess I never tried to play them in the computer before.
I was also thinking of trying to use up some Dynex brand 16X DVD's I bought last Summer at Best Buy.
Is my project doomed before it starts? I kow those guys don't have TVs and DVD players, just laptops.
          Any ideas?
          Thanks again,
          Jody

              DVD Blanks

The disks are all dash-R's...yeah, I know, nobody likes Dynex, but so far I haven't had many coasters. Will stay wirh Verbatim in the future though. Is there anything important to know when choosing the dash-R's versus the Plus-R's?
My Dell uses Win XP Home. I opted out of the Vista experience when I bought it.
Thanks for the link, I'll see where it leads me...

I wonder if your recorder doesn't like the 16x disks? This should be working for you?

Like I said try them in another conputer, it's possible that software has hosed yours.

If those disks play in other standalones and don't play in either of your drives there may be filter drivers installed on your dell messing it up?

Check other burned dvd in your computer to isolate the problem?

If it is filter drivers we can sanitize your dell easily enough?

I discovered it's the Windows Media Player that doesn't like copies. This will play using Dell Cine Player and also on the other computer using PowerDVD. That's a relief, but how do I make a copy of it?

You can use ImgBurn to copy them. Use Read mode to put them on your hard drive as an ISO file, then Write mode to burn the ISO to a new disk.

"My Computer" labels it as "JVC DVD_ROM".

I thought it should recognise the name I gave it but it doesn't because I named it through the stand alone recorder.

I've downloaded ImgBurn also, it's reading the DVD right now.

                            Thanks!

that's the label for the disk not the contents

                              open/explore/whatever

                              what are the files/folders?
