let's try starting over, the filter driver issue looks like it's solved, but that computer is awfully old to be trying to burn with nero, convert mp3's and use iffy blanks

I suspect your problem is several factors

disconnect the old cd-rom drive(power also)

make the burner master and put on the end of the cable, make sure the burner is connected to the power lead closest to the power supply and on that set of power leads all by itself

you might want to free up some hard drive space and defrag and reboot before burning

I did a cleanup and defrag before burning that one. I removed roxio and rp but I didn't do anything with the registry. I'm not sure what else I can do to get more hard drive space.

I will try making the Sony drive the master.

your log showed no problem drivers

Filter Detection and Removal Tool 4.6

would be a way to check if nero is telling us the truth

burn slow with good blanks, maybe ask around and see if anyone has some old ram to put in that computer

I ran the filter check tool. Here's the results:

Filter Check & Removal Tool v4.6

          Lowerfilter Scan results:
          No LowerFilters found.

          Upperfilter Scan results:
          No UpperFilters found.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, I just started a new job. I agree that I desperately need more ram on this computer, but right now I don't know anyone who would have any. I will probably meet some people at my job who are into computers.

          3)
I will go in and disconnect the CD-R drive. First I want to clarify what you mean by making the DVD drive the master. I know there are jumper settings for slave and master but my drives are currently jumpered on the 3rd setting, don't remember what it's called.

that old cable may be the problem but for now just disconnect the cable and power from the cd drive and hook the burner to the flat data cable where the cd-rom was

leave the jumper on cable select

if you can get a newer cable put the burner on the end and jumper master

I unhooked the old CD drive, and plugged the DVD into the end of the cables. Tried to burn a CD and the same thing happened once again... dang.

hi bcburton.don't go crazy w/this. i just returned 2 brand new drives that wouldn't burn cd's, or read them. some drives just have issues w/certain name brand blank media. i use sony cd blanks. my samsung had no problem w/anyone of them. the 2 pioneers i sent back did. they were the 112d, and the newer 115d. found out the hard way they had issues w/cds. waiting for the 112d back from pioneer by way of a recall.

i use imgburn 4 my dvds, and certain cd stuff. it's great. just put a blank cd in imgburn, and it will show you the mid on the right in the disc info column. also if you don't have enough space, or ram on your pc like chewy suggests, you might want to chuck nero. it's a resource hog, especially w/an old pc like yours. you might want to use CDex to copy your cds, and BURRRN to burn them. you can google both.

try out the power user guide, and free up system resources guide in the forum also. it'll give you some more space, and hence lil more speed. even some of the newer burners have issues w/the top notch cds like verbatim, and taiyo yuden. i've used maxell dvds-r w/no problems, and also sony dvds, and cds. bottom line you might have to find what works, after you eliminate any hardware, or software issues which seems like you're doing.

if anything else try sending it back, and getting a new one. say it was a gift. a new different brand one that is.
                SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Take the suggestions and follow the directions. The results will speak for themselves.

                Google is definitely our friend.

Thanks for the tips. What I really want to do right now is get some more blank DVDs and see if I still have the capability to burn those properly. Also, I think I might put the old CD-RW drive back in. I just haven't had much free time to fool around with it.
