Good way to capture from my DVR?

Hello new to the forum and looking to upgrade my video card after my PC died recently. Since I will be rebuilding my PC I figured why not get a video card that will allow me capture some shows I have stored on my DVR.
Basically I dish and several boxes setup through out the house and I have reached my maximum I can DVR. I don't want to delete some of the shows I have stored, but instead want to capture them to my PC and render a DVD. I have worked with Spruce Up in the past and have rendered DVD's before I have just never grabbed video from a DVR or external source before. What's a good card to use for this and is it possible to hookup the DVR directly to the card or do I go from the DVR to the TV and from the TV to the card?
Any advice on hardware, guides, or tutorials is greatly appreciated!

    Capture Digital Video

Most of the newer DVRs have a firewire out. If yours does, then you don't need a new video card, just hook it to the firewire port in your computer. There are several softwares that allow editing, etc. of the DV file after that. If you don't have a firewire port, it would be cheaper to buy a pci expansion card than a fancy video card.
This isn't a complete answer, sorry, hopefully it will help.

I have a ViP622 DVR that has a USB 2.0 and Ethernet port, but I belive they are disabled prior to being shipped so not sure if either are an option.

Oops, sorry, thought you were referring to a video camera. Ignore my post.

Are you trying to capture hi def (HD) or standard def (SD)?

To my knowledge the best method to capture HD is to use a sat company or cable company HD DVR thru HDMI cable to your HDTV. This is ONLY for playback in HD you will not be able to output at 1080P and burn to a Blu-ray disk.

For SD use your own personal DVD recorder with a built-in hard drive and built-in DVD-5 optical drive with built-in editing software to edit out the commercials. To capture SD I use the S-video input on the personal DVD recorder to the hard drive and edit if needed and burn directly to a DVD-5 disk.

Well I was hoping to do both HD and SD. I already have a Dish DVR and big HD ready TV, but the problem is I'm running out of space on my DVR and would like to export the media to my PC. Not sure what you mean by "use my S-Video input on my personal dvd recorder??" My DVD recorder is a drive on my PC so how do I get the data from the DVR to the PC??

I was under the impression that you were being circumvented from any digital transfer from a dvr, especially any hidef format. An analoge transfer should be possible. This whole protection(DRM) is so screwed up, about the only thing that is protected by law is vcr recording. Almost anything aired today is liable to end up for sale on dvd and they would rather you buy it, it's all about making more money.

Not sure what you mean, but I just want to free up some space and move the data to my pc and then archive it.

If you can output thru component from your dvr you should be able to capture analog, however the best test is try to record to vcr, if that trips some protection then capture will be tricky

It's all a bunch of crap intended to prevent fair use/time shifting and encourage you to spend more money.

Thanks for the tip i'll have to try that. Now what is a VCR? hahah just kidding. I'll have to dig it out of my closet. If that doesn't work I guess i'll just have to spend More money. Now if I did get a capture card do you hook it up to the TV or to the DVR? I'm not sure, but shouldn't I be able to run a line in to the TV and a line out to my pc and just watch the tv and hit record on the PC?

Ok I tried it last night and it worked fine. I could record from a live show or from my stored shows. So now I guess I just need a good capture card that I can hookup to my pc? Do they make capture cards that can capture HD?
