What do folks do with h264, DivX, etc?

I've been editing and burning DV, and avis, to DVD for a bit. Just saw the guide for Megui and thought I'd give it a whirl, so took one of the VOBs on my HD and turned it in to an MP4. It took 3 hrs for a 2:20 movie, to convert at high quality, shrunk down to fit on one DVD-5 and it seems to be successful as it will play on WMP. At least until the opening menu comes up, at which point it stops, because presumably WMP doesn't know what to do with it. So obviously the menus need to be stripped, can that be done in megui/avisynth, or do I need to go back in to the VOB? But a bigger question: will most standalone DVD players accept MP4 files? Since it would have to be burned as data, I think not. So what is the purpose of all this, unless you're a porn producer and putting movies on the 'net????
Sorry for this newby question, inquiring minds want to know .......

DivX can be put in the AVI container and most standalones these days will play it.

But you are right in assuming that there are very few mp4 compatible players now. H264 is MPEG4 AVC whereas DivX/XviD are MPEG4 ASP. AVC is more advanced but still lacks standalone compatibility.

Thanks, Paglamon. Good to know Xvid/DivX can be put in an avi container. Maybe I can use this after all.

If you happen to have an Xbox360, you can burn your .avi or mp4 H.264 to cd disc or stream the video to your Xbox, and play..no other player needed..Megui works great for this, even at a lower bitrate..I use TVersity for wireless streaming from my PC to Xbox....
