    what sound encoding is best?

I recorded some programs off my satellite dish using a DVD recorder. I want to convert them to divx. I use Dr Divx for conversion.

The dvd recorder records the sound as Dolby Digital 2 channel. I usually convert the programs with 128kb mp3 sound. I use 1250 bitrate for video giving me 10mb per minute. On a standalone dvd player these look really good but I'm really picky about quality.

Is it better if I convert the sound to 5.1 using Nero and then convert the programs using AC3 (448kb)sound and use 1200 bitrate. This gives me around 12.5mb per minute with full 5.1 sound.

Also if the 5.1 sound is better, should I convert my existing divx files back to dvd, convert the sound to 5.1 and then re-encode or should I only for some programs that benefit from 5.1 sound - things with explosions and gunfire.

    Thanks for any suggestions.
