Is it OK to ask about copying your own DVDs?

I just joined after clicking on the Help menu of a program that I know see is not supposed to be discussed here anymore. I have also noted that Rule 19 seems to honoured more in the breach than in the observance.

This is not a complaint, just a query. I have collection of around 70 Hindi movies, many very old and not great quality. I use the said not-to-be-mentioned program to make HDD copies to preserve the movies, as I'm pretty sure that this is legal in NZ, where I live. I registered here to ask a question about a layer break option, but now I'm at a loss to know how to find the information I'm after. It does seem that there are still many posts about the program which led me here, but as a rank newbie, I'm not looking to get offside by breaking any rules. Hence the subject line of this post - is it OK to ask about making backup copies of DVDs you own, if the laws of your country allow it?

The removal of the offending program wasn't because of what you "are" doing with it, but what you "can" do with it and prompted the addition of Rule 19. So essentially, the discussion involving said program(s) are no longer allowed. There are many forums that still allow such discussions though so don't get discouraged.

As for the layer break, if you aren't compressing the data then you don't need a compression program to begin with...simply use Imgburn in build mode and choose the best layer break from there.

I haven't been using compression, and I hadn't heard of Imgburn before, so thanks for the clarification.

And you'll very much find that rule 19 is strictly policed. I dunno where you get "honoured in the breach from".

If you want advice on backing up home movies, we can give it, but not in terms of prohibited software.

And yes, to copy your own home made movies on a 1:1 basis, use ImgBurn in read mode, followed by write mode.

I am very new at this DVD copying but as far as the time and law of the land is concerned, there are some copyright laws which allows and some does not.
To be on the safe side If you own a nero program at home, you can, surely copy a original DVD, if you are not doing it for commercial purpose.
