Broken time thingie or god knows what in video.

Sorry for the almost totally incomprehensible subject line.
Let me explain what is happening.

    I have sony vegas 8.

A friend sent me a dvd with some footage she took on her camera. How she converted it into a DVD is beyond me at the moment. But she did, and she wants me to take the footage off the DVD, add some titles, then send it back to her.

Since I'm having fun learning Sony Vegas I don't mind doing this.

    Here's the problem.

When I drag and drop the vob file into my Vegas 8 it seems to think the clip is only about 8.3 seconds long (124 frames)

When I play the clip using VLC, it plays for about 6 minutes.

When I try to use VLC Wizard to convert the footage it also thinks it is 8.3 seconds long.

I have tried Multiquence and it will load the vob but only thinks the file is 8.3 seconds long.

I have full versions of all software, licensed etc (where applicable.)

Is this something broken in the VOB that can be fixed?

Or, am I horribly mistake to think the Sony Vegas should be able to read this video stream?
[Edit, yes, the Sony Vegas folks corrected my misconception. They do *not* support vob file format. bummer].

If it can't read the video stream, how do I get the data without conversion. I don't want to lose video quality by converting to an intermediate format.
[Edit, So this is now the important question. How can I get the video data without crunching it into some lossy format that makes it look all weird?]

Thanks for any help, including any clues on where I should have posted this question in the first place.

    Claude

The GOP timecodes are probably wrong. These are 25 bit time codes in the header of each group of pictures. If they are out of sequence for any reason (and before you ask, I wouldn't know why some software would mess things up, but they do), then VLC will only "see" the frames that have sequential timecodes. It will play the clip OK, but not seek. This is a sure sign that the SMPTE timecodes are buggered.

Try to demux and remux, but there's no guarantee it will work, since the demuxed video will also have unsequential timecodes.

Womble MPEG Wizard DVD has a function to fix these bad timecodes (and other incorrect things caused by crappy software).

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

Thanks for the heads up about the two programs.
I will look into them to see if they will do the job I need.
Thanks for taking the time to answer.
