Newbie gets SPANKED! Please tell me why...

Well... I got SPANKED on my very first post... Typical. I guess I was discussing some top secret stuff that really could cause a rift in the time space continuum or fire breathing winged dragons to be released to wreck havoc on the world. Want to see what I said that was so evil...??? Go here:

Anyway, I'm not trying to be a dick, really. Someone owns this forum and they can have their own rules. (I'm sure I'm getting kicked out now!) BUT... just what is the rationale for not even DISCUSSING certain things?? Seems like censorship at the worst level. We're not making bombs or date rape drugs or harboring terrorists.... Can someone please explain? Are the media moguls SO powerful that they can frighten a web site owner into not even allowing DISCUSSION of certain topics?? I'm just curious. Thanks for helping me to be a better person...

P.S. My personal opinion, for anyone that gives a crap, is that I bought the movie, I can do what I want with it. Remember those round pieces of black vinyl that you used to put on a thing called a record player? I didn't have a record player in my car so when I wanted to listen to that record thingy in my car, I'd put it on something called an audio cassette that I could take with me and play in said automobile. I know this my sound strange and bizarre to all you young folks, but it's true. And I believed I had a right to do that under something called "fair use". I believe I still have certain "fair use" rights which I have not violated doing the things I am doing in this post:

Oh the IRONY of it all...

So I was just re-reading my post... when what to my wondering eyes should appear!!?? A Google ad in the upper right hand corner of http://forum.digital-digest.com where my post is, saying "DVD Ripper Review" with a link. The link takes you here:

where 5 "commercial" ripping packages are compared "side by side". One of the "features" listed under "Input Formats Supported" is "Copyright Protected DVD". Notice, 4 of the 5 packages offer this feature.

So, even though we aren't allowed to discuss such things, we can view ads for such things? Hey, there's "ethics" then there's "business ethics" right...??? I mean, everyone has to eat. Maybe the forum owner would allow such discussion if we wrote him or her a check every month??

Oh the irony of it all... Somewhere George Carlin is looking down (or up) thinking that I've done good for today....

(I'm sure I'm kicked off now.... Doubtful anyone will ever even see this post...)

You got spanked (without infraction, I might add) because you mentioned rippers and decryption - this is against forum rule 19. This was pointed out to you. (It had nothing to do with google's ads, which, by and large, are out of our control). You agreed to abide by our rules when you signed up. They are not lengthy or hard to understand.

Again, I will point you to this post by admin and rule 19.

And you may not have violated the DMCA (although that is under debate - fair use has gotten big kicks up the behind in the past), but that is moot on this board. There is no discussion - or even mention of - ripping and rippers here. Sorry.

      Regards

        Les,

I understand what rule I broke... I won't do it again. What I am trying to understand is why the rule exists in the first place? Is it illegal to DISCUSS de**yption? You guys aren't providing the tools for download (which I could see MIGHT border on questionable, although I think its hilarious there is an advert on my post page where I can go and supposedly legally (I guess) buy a tool to do this). I'm just trying to understand why the rule exists in the first place?? I'm not arguing the right for you to have any rule you want - just trying to understand why it was put in effect. What is the fear of forum users discussing such items - I honestly don't know. Is there some provision of DCMA I'm missing...???? Some "gag order" or something? If so, I'm more scared and leery of my government than ever!! Thanks!

As usual, I will not go into more details about this and I appreciate that you do not speculate further on this forum as to what is going on.
