Nero Recode better than DVDShrink?

Hi guys,

I've had a look and can't see anyone has asked this question!

I am currently using DVD Shrink which seems to work well. Is Nero Recode any better than DVD Shrink? I see that DVD Shrink is no longer being developed so I was wondering if Recode is a better long term solution but am not sure of the difference in quality, speed etc.

There seems to be consensus that Recode works a bit quicker than DVD Shrink. They were written by the same person, so the code will be very similar.

Recode also has the handy option of "merging" titles, which is useful if you are combining a "flipper". Amongst other features, Recode also enables you to manually set some of the advanced settings in terms of quality if the difference between average and maximum quantization levels is above a user specified point. It also gives some handy info on the titles (frame rate, size, etc), which DVD Shrink does not.

However, this comes at a price (unless you have the Nero Ultra or Enterprise Editions, in which case, Recode is packaged with Nero's rather 2nd rate burning "solution").

I would, and do, stick with DVD Shrink.

I already have Nero 6 Ultra Edition - so I have recode already. Sorry, should have said that at the start.

I don't use Nero to burn DVD's - I use DVD Decrypter and PcgEdit (after reading a really useful guide on this site!).

I'm really wondering if I should switch seeing as I have both.

Since I wrote that guide, I guess it would not be me recommending a switch.

Put briefly, IMHO, NBR stinks. Continue to use PgcEdit/DVD Decrypter for error free burns.

However, you might like to experiement with Recode and DVD Shrink on a couple of movies and check out the quality. I do think you will find that DVD Shrink is a more than adequate solution.

In the rare instances when DVD Shrink can't get good quality, Recode won't either, IMHO and you will need to go to 2 disks or dual layer.

Hi,
New here, just browsing and came across this thread and I have something to add.

Been using Shrink since 1.2 and nothing else came close...until the latest version of Recode.

Just did a backup of Battlestar Galactica-The Mini Series, movie only. It is 3hrs long. I used Recode, automatic compression and had setting to highest quality. The compression was 54%!!!

When viewed on my 51" HDTV...WOW, no artifacts. Boy, am I impressed. Viewing movies done with Shrink, there were some artifacts that I never saw in my old 27" TV or the 15" LCD moniter. My eyesight is not the best, to see the details in smaller screens as others may see.

Since I already own Nero Ultra, figured I would give Recode a try. Now I will use it more, but keeping Shrink as an old dependable backup

To make a valid comparison, you should use the latest version of DVD Shrink (v.3.2.0.15) to compress the same "Battlestar Galactica-The Mini Series, movie only" - using both the "Deep Analysis" and "AEC" (Adaptive Error Compensation)...

I did that originaly.
The Shrink encoded disc, when viewed on the HDTV, had many artifacts. I wanted to try Recode to see if it was any better or the same. Believe me, I was surprised at the results.

No real reason to be very surprised. NERO Recode is a program that continues to be developed. DVD Shrink (which should really be viewed as beta testing for Recode) is no longer in development...

Although, it is a bit surprising to hear that you saw "many artifacts" despite having used BOTH DVD Shrink's "Deep Analysis" and "AEC"

I think that had to do with the amount of compression involved. Shrink does reach a limit to quality, when large VOB's must be shrunk. Recode had the same problem, in the beginning.
Appearently Recode has been improved on considerabley. So, it does not surprise me at all, just the results that did.

I am a new user to Recode 2 and notice that while DVD Shrink utilizes my entire processing speed, Recode 2 only takes up about 70%, i wonder why this is?

Click on the 'More' button during the encoding and change the setting 'Priority' to 'High'.
