Mmm, For me it would have to be DVD Shrink!
Although its decryption algorithms are a little outdated it still serves it purpose (alongside other freeware)

With AEC incorporated some would say (in certain situations) it rivals an encoder

Remember, Cynthia is both a Shrink and Recode Mod so I bet she goes for one of the above (Shrink or Recode!)

          Hi elizerrojas!

The thing I lack in DVD Shrink is the ability to 'Merge Titles'. Very often I only do a re-author, especially if it is a DVD serie - spinning over several original DVDs. This function you can find in Nero Recode 2. You can do the same thing with DVD Shrink - but you have to use the guide 'Previous Chapter Skipping after DVD Shrink Re-author' by 2cool. Does involves some work.

The thing I lack in Nero Recode 2 is the function in re-author mode 'Set Default Streams'. This is very handy if you want the subs on your DVD - but don't want to show them automatic when you play the DVD. I have a feeling that you can do this in Nero Recode 2 if you use IfoEdit and insert a Pre Command row in the PGC command table as (SetSTN) Set Subpicture Stream 0 (Off/On) in VTS_PGC_1.

There is also a problem with Nero Recode 2 - that when you re-author - the Titles must reside in the same folder. So in those cases I have to use DVD Shrink first to do the collection in the same folder before I can use Nero Recode 2 on those files.

The big advantage with Nero Recode 2 is the speed.

So which one do I use and when?
          • Full back up of the DVD - Nero Recode 2.
          • Series - The cutting part with DVD Shrink and the final work with Nero Recode 2.
          • Movie only with foreign movie with swedish subs - Nero Recode 2.
          • Movie only with swedish movie with swedish subs that I don't want to be showned automatic - DVD Shrink.
Lately I have also been trying to use/understand to use DVD Rebuilder - another free tool you can use if you want to backup your DVDs.

I normally use the method "jmet" put forth, except I still sometimes use "SmartRipper" to rip DVDs.

thanks a lot everyone, i knew the answers to this question were going to be very interesting. i didn't forsee what i was going to learn in term of what program to use depending on movie type or what wanted to back up (episodes. foreign, full back up. main movie only etc..)

by the way jmet, i have dvd43 free always working in the back groung and i have never have any problems with decrypter or any other program.

                once again thanks everyone.

I currently have Nero 6 Enterprise Edition. How does it compare to Nero Recode? Also thinking about getting a DL DVD Burner which can burn up to 8.5 GB of stuff onto a single DVD blank but not sure if Nero can handle that. Would any of the programs you talked about here matter (Shrink, Recode etc.) if you've got a DL Burner?

Nero Recode is one of the programs included in the Nero 6 Enterprise edition.

Both Nero, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink can handle DL burnings.
