Ok, after converting them all, I tried combining them using MPEG Tools. However, after like 6-7 hrs (of a 15hr video) the audio and video stopped playing when I would move it on the timeline.

So basically, is there a limit to how big or long a .mpg can be. Or is there a limit to how much TMPG can combine?

Why would you possibly try to join 15 hours of video? It's obviously not going to fit onto one CD (or even DVD), no matter what compression you use.

You're either running into software limitations, memory limitations, or O/S limitations - but who cares? Unless I've completely misunderstood your last post, it makes no sense to do this...

        Sounds absurd huh?
Ok, the deal is that I'm combining an entire season of a tvshow with the plan to edit and convert them to 2-3 ~700mb divx files to fit the whole thing on a couple CDs.

The only reason I tried to combine the entire thing into one .mpg is b/c I thought it'd be safer and reduce the chance for a sync issue if it's all one file that's being cut up. But after doing 2 separate joinings (one 15hr, one ~10), they both stop working at the same exact 6:37 spot on the timeline. I'm joining them all into 3 separate files now instead of one.

        Wish me luck.

I have to agree. That is.......First, join the files in MPEG-1 format. TMPGEnc is a fine program and versatile.....but "Camel's MPEG Joiner" is easier and simpler for file joining.

Crap, every file is getting a "SYNC ERROR" error in VDub, even w/o doing any editing. Guess I could try editing in TMPEG, but VDub won't even convert for me now.

              Still around setarip?
I never got this to work, but got really busy with another thing that delayed this project. A bit more help would be much appreciated.

Why don't you simply convert EACH EPISODE into a separate DivX-compressed .AVI - and create several CD-Rs containing these .AVIs and Hobbit's DVD Launcher (The name is misleading - it works with .AVIs written to EITHER DVDs or CD-Rs)?

Well, I was hoping to cut them - take parts out and join them together - so the story would flow better than having to start and stop files.

Ok, so I have all the eps converted to the same res and fps in .mpg but I'm sort of lost and rusty w/ the software. So I need the ability to: Join, edit, and convert to divx. What do you think I should start with? I've got vdub and tmpgEnc for sure.

                      thx a bunch,

                        1) Join into groups using TMPGEnc, as you already know how to do

Playback joined file group(s) to make certain you've retained audio/video synchronization

                        2) Convert to DivX-compressed .AVI (for each joined group), using VirtualDub

Playback joined file group(s) to make certain you've retained audio/video synchronization

                        3) Edit in VirtualDub

Playback joined file group(s) to make certain you've retained audio/video synchronization

                        4) Burn CDs

                        5) Go to sleep ;>}

Once again, thx so much. I'll report any issues I might run into.

PS: "Get some sleep" will come between EVERY step b/c everything takes so long.

One more question before I start:
Since I don't know how much time I can fit into the final 700MB cuts, do you think it would be possible to keep all the videos in one file (like 15hrs long), then split it at the end in divx form? Would that be asking too much of the software?

Alright, I didn't try putting everything in one file , split into 4 instead. Alright, they all combined fine to make 4 new, big .mpgs.

                                Successful Results:
22 mpgs combined into 4 separate .mpgs
2 of these .mpgs converted into divx .avis

                                Unsuccessful Results:
2 of them did NOT convert correctly. They stop at locations in the timeline where the original .mpgs joined each other. I recompiled the joined .mpgs, but the results were the same.

                                Any ideas setarip?
