Call me dumb but I'm going to ask
    I downloaded DIVX 5.0.2 something
I got the free ver (and would pay for the real thing
    if it works)
    and installed it
the only thing I can do is open the settings box
    and The player

    I can't find the
    DivX Codec Main Menu
    where is it
Its not in the shortcuts of in the DIr

I read the how to use it
but I can't find the DivX Codec Main Menu

what kind of MAIN MENU are you looking for?

encoding or decoding - what do you want to do?

the screenshot does NOT seem to be taken from divx5 but from a former version of divx.

so dont worry, you wont see this picture in combination with divx5:

        as for this image:

you will not always see this screen. in case you use gordianknot for example, all neccessary input will be done through gordianknot.

again: dont worry in case you use a different tool/routine.

maybe you should compare/read additional guides as well!?
here is one i wrote and thus know quite good on gordianknot and divx 5.02:

Just to elaborate a little. You can't open the divx5 encoder main menu by itself, because that would make no sense. Because the divx5 encoder doesn't work alone, it must be used together with some video transcoding tool. Such as virtualdub, flask, DVDx .... Most of these programs let you access the divx5 encoder menu, to configure the video encoding. But as uncas points out there are exceptions.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.
