Can't open avi files with virtualdub in winXP

    Hi, I have a problem.

When I tried to open an AVI file in winXP I got this error:

"Couldnt locate decompressor for format "DIV3" (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V3 [Hack: DivX Low-Motion])

VirtualDub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

I have install DivX 5.0.2 and the movie play fine with wmp 7.1 and realOne player.

I use Virtualdub to open the file is because I need to use it to extract the AC3 from the avi and then save it to .wav. After that convert it to VCD with TMPGEnc

I able to do the task in win 98, but not win XP. Can anyone help me to figure out the solution so that I don't have to use two PC to do the job. Thanks....

Try installing the DivX 3.11 codec

To put it more precisely, try installing the Tsunami-patched DivX 3.11 codec. It is available from Tsunami codec packs (version 3.9.6 and above). The patch basically prevents the DivX 5.02 from automatically taking over the decoding tasks for 3.11 contents.

Umm....I tried divx 3.11 Tsunami Filter pack 3.9.7 as you said, it don't work. Enchanter do you know others tools that can extract ac3 from .avi as virtualdub? Maybe I should try alternative way. thanks again

others tools that can extract ac3 from .avi
            nandub or virtualdubMOD

for vd_mod make sure to downlaod LEXER and those other NEEDED DLLs as well:

VirtualDubMod is based on VirtualDub by Avery Lee. Born as a unification of several modifications, new features have been added including support…

No, don't work. When I use the nandub, same error show. When I use virtualdubMOD with needed .dll and Lexer the error below shows

"Cannot determine file type of "D:\The movie--default.avs"

"When I use the nandub, same error show."

Despite the error message regarding the inability to process the videostream, did you try, from the "File" dropdown menu, selecting "Save as WAV"?

                  Nandub.

Check that you have done the following:
                  1. Open AVI in nandub
                  2. Set Audio tab to Direct Stream Copy
                  3. Go to File -> Save WAV... and give a name to the new file

The resulting file will be AC3 file, albeit with a WAV extension. Simply rename its extension back to AC3.

                      Very weird ....

I think the problem is clashing in your system.. perhaps you download a lotttt of codecs in your system?

After all of those Replys.... I can only Suggest that you Install windows again.

What more can cuase VirtualDub to reacte like this?

perhaps you shuld also send mail to VirtualDub.org.

I'm sorry but this error happens to me too. I've tried several computers and all of them give the mentioned error. But the weirdest thing is that it has worked on my own computer once and all of the sudden i got the message once. So i've tried othercomputers and to my surprise they gave the same error. Reinstalling the comp obviously doesn't work so save yourself the trouble

                          Can't view AVI.

I can hear the sound from a movie in avi file but do not see any picture. The realplayer screen says "Unable to render video; DIV3 Decompresser not found".

I have been pointed to this website, apparently because DIV can help solve the problem, is this true? Can anyone help?
