i would like to show you four screenshots here, which show that:
1) a freeware encoder like HC ENC can be better than cce
2) filtering might prove useful
take a close look at the soldier standing in the door and at the edges of the text
1.
original source - no encoder/no filtering
2.
HC ENC
3.
CCE
4.
PRO CODER 2 with filtering
----------------------------------------------------------------
the movie was quite noisy and thus i decided to use procoder2 (which is my favourite encoder) together with undot and fluxsmooth and i like the results, which procoder2 + filtering gave my even better than the source material
c.f. here if you're interested in how filtering was achieved
i think one can clearly see that hc did produce much less blockiness on many areas of the picture, whereas cce's output is rather crappy
of course we're dealing with low bitrate conversion here, as the title (Der Untergang - an impressive german movie on the last days of hitler in berlin) is failry long and i did want to keep all extras/bonus material
but it is not the first whole length movie comparison i did, that showed, hc is not only competative but sometimes (i.e. in low bitrate scenes) even better than cce (2.70 in this case)
moreover, i think one can see that every now and then a little filtering might even improve the original material, when studios didnt care too much to provide an ultra clean source
