DVD-RB + CCE: passes, bitrate, matrices, and anime, cg settings questions

here are my settings:

DVD-RB Pro 0.93.2 + CCE 2.70 [bias: 25, q_prec: 16, passes: 4 (vaf + 3)]

Matrices:
Main Feature: Encode Default
Low Bitrate: Low Bitrate
Very Low Bitrate:Very Low Bitrate
Extras: QuEnc

can someone tell me if there are any setting i'm overlooking to get better results? any changes i can try out and see what i get?

are 4 passes too much? how do 2 or 3 passes do for low-bitrate dvd's <3Mbps, <2.5Mbps, <2Mbps? are 2 passes for high bitrate >3Mbps sufficient for best possible preceived quality. I'm not looking for a definitive answer, just people's opinions.

can someone suggest any settings for anime and cg stuff that i might try? i've heard that there are problems with edges and stuff. or should i go with dvdshrink?

also, is there a program available to look at the min/max/avg bitrates without using Prepare in DVD-RB.

any info from people's experiences would be great. thanks.

my first thought was: why does puraido not use a special matrix for anime like KIKA COMIC HIGH / KIKA COMIC LOW

then i realized you were talking about the freeware edition of rb (and be reminded that 0.94 is available)

so my recommendation is: donate $10 to jdobbs, get life-time updates for the PRO version and find a tool that is much better than its freeware counterpart

because using special matrices is possible only in the PRO version (and that's not the only option not being available in the freeware version of rebuilder) and a matrix can be very helpful for better compression

in addition to using a matrix you could use a spacio-temporal smoother like *fluxsmooth* (cf the sticky about *using filters in rebuilder*) or special denoisers for animes like THIS ONE

In the pro version, stuff like Rockas Matrix Editor (for using different matrices) and Robot1's RB Opt program come to the fore (for setting bitrates by cell).

Gives you so much more versatility.

thanks for the advice guys. the latest pro version sounds like more fun, or more headaches with more things to tweak and tune, heh. i have a couple more questions:

are there certain matrices that are good for normal movies, in different bitrate ranges, or does one have do some trial and error?

what causes the graininess in a lot of commercial dvds. is it intentional? i tried undot.deen on a segment of crouching tiger hidden dragon and it looked pretty nice, but i wondered why they didn't make the original look like THAT. but then again that grainy film effect reminds me of watching the movie at the theatre, so i'm not so sure i would want to part with it.

is "mosquito noise" the halo thing that appears at the edges of people and things? a couple years ago, i used to think that the dvd format was like the ultimate of video quality, that every disc would make u go wow. but on some discs..... not so much...
