encode the extras in half D1 first?

reading the guides i don't saw answer for this idea...

is possible to encode the whole dvd 2 times when first only the extras in half dvd(352*xxx) and after that the main movie with less compression using the result of the first part?

You can tick Half D1 and Half Space for extras anyway in your Mode, can't you?

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

the option blu mentioned is for the EXTRAS and not the main title

it can be found in the mode menu but i would NOT use this option because it will reduce the bitrate of all extras to 50% which i consider too much

i DO use this option (in a slightly different way) with 25% and have been very pleased with the results so far

in order to use 10, 25, 33 ... percent reduction on the extras you will have to go this way:

        - tick all the vts that are not the MAIN title (05 was my main title)

        - use MODE => STEAL SPACE from extras => n % ( i prefer 25% as much more will decrease image quality too much imho)

in my case reducing the extras by 25% made room for additional bitrate of 12.8% for the main title

@ UncasMS: Give me a referer to how to put my screenshots here, they look great !

@jeo: Doing what you first thought of is a bad idea, because:

            Mpeg-2 is lossy compression.
Decoding/encoding with NO compression will even lead to quality loss.

So doing it twice, even has more quality loss, especially concerning GIBBS artificats (the 'noise' around sharp high contrasted area's on a medium or low brightness background, or the other way around).

Always try to use 1 run, as this is important for quality.

Don't be mistaken about the 'number of passes' as this is a complete different subject and is still in the same run of DVD-RB(-PRO).

If you wanna do things, whatever what, try to put them in one pass for as much as possible. You can use even different bitrates for segments as you wish, use filters for improvement, and other matrices using certain encoders, but try it in just 1 DVD-RB run.

It's a bit like analogue copying a tape. The second copy of a copy will be worse then the original copy. This is because of the lossy compression used in MPEG-2, although processing is digital.

            Like doing this with audio:

            1) Convert an MP3 (lossy) to WAV (not lossy) (DVD-RB: Decoding)
            2) Proces te WAV. (DVD-RB, conversion/Filters)
            3) Convert it to MP3 again (DVD-RB: Encoding)
            4) Convert the MP3 to WAV (DVD-RB: Decoding)
            5) Proces the WAV again (DVD_RB: Conversion/Filters)
            6) Convert it MP3 again (DVD-RB: Encoding)

I hope you'll get the point.

            good luck
