    I always use Lremovedust() and Degrainmedian()

    Degrainmedian() for even the cleanest of DVD's

    Lremovedust() for the grainier ones.

    Also another way to see what you are gaining (or loosing) is to run your filters thru this comaprison script and be your eyes be a good judge of it.

    Code:
    LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\DVD-RB\DGDecode.dll")
    source=mpeg2source("C:\TEMP\D2VAVS\V02.D2V",idct=7)
    left=source.script1()
    right=source.script2()
    width=left.width()/2
    height=left.height()
    left=crop(left,0,0,width,height).addborders(0,0,2,0,$0000FF).crop(2,0,-0,-0)
    right=crop(right,width,0,width,height).addborders(2,0,0,0,$0000FF).crop(0,0,-2,-0)
    StackHorizontal(left.subtitle("Script1"),right.subtitle("Script2"))
    function script1(clip c) {
    c
    #----- ENTER CODE OF SCRIPT ONE HERE -----
    #----- END OF CODE OF SCRIPT ONE-----
    }
    function script2(clip c) {
    c
    #----- ENTER CODE OF SCRIPT TWO HERE -----
    #DeGrainMedian(limitY=5,limitUV=5,mode=3)
    Lremovedust(17,1)
    #----- END OF CODE OF SCRIPT TWO-----
    }
    Save it as .avs and open with MPC.
    This will compare your source with the filtered source and play it.

              Are you using the ver bundled with RB or the Neuron one ???

              You have to use either the version bundled with RB or Nan's version of DGdecode.

              Neuron's latest release doesnt work with RB.

                  Question.
                  Kind of already answered, but I want to be sure.

                  Which encoder is good for what bitrates?
                  HC
                  Qunec
                  Autoqmaxenc
                  Procoder
                  CCE

                  What if you used one for everything, would you see a big difference?

                  Thanks.

                  BTW, I really don't care how long it takes to encode it, i Just want to get the best quality.

                      I can only vouch for the ones that I have used and these are free too.

                      AutoQmatenc - Use for low bitrates, anything with Avg BR less than 3000Kbps and max BR not more than 3500 Kbps.

                      HCEnc - Anything for an Avg BR more than 3500 Kbps and max BR could be anything higher above the avg.

                      Usually HCEnc works for most of the encodes and normal 2-2.5 hrs of movie, but wouldnt suggest it for a 3 hrs and above movie.

                      Autoqmatenc works excellent with low bitrates even as low as 1500 Kbps but has problems with higher bitrates. SAPSTAR (author of AQM), is already working on resolving this problem.

                        I can vouch for Procoder 2 at all rates and HC (with special matrices down to 2Mbps - which is bloody good considering the price).

                        I wouldn't touch CCE at low BR but it's OK at average to higher ones.

                          Thanks.

                          I heard that procoder darkens the video a bit.
                          do you know how that can be overcome?

                            dont worry

                            this is NOT the case normally; it happened once to me when disabling *convert to yuy2* using rebuilder

                            i wouldnt know what really caused it but re-enabling *convert to yuy2* set everything back to normal

                            c.f. thse comparison and the results procoder gave:

                              im thinking that's cause procoder (and definitely cce) doesn't accept YV12-- it must be converted to yuy2 first. when done in avisynth via converttoyuy2(), its done reliably. when colorspace conversion is not included in the script, its done by a capable codec on your system (usually xvid). divx/xvid are not best for the job and will likely cause problems, not to mention its usually slower and screws up interlaced material-- it assumes progressive :^)

                                I would like to perform a comparison as Tech mentioned how to earlier, but I wanted to double check what I was doing.

                                I write this script in notepad and save as .avs correct? And I add my filter setup in where the red text is, thereby removing the " Enter Code of Script Here " lines right?

                                Do I need to leave the green text in?? Or do I overwrite this with my second filter script for comparison.

                                LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\DVD-RB\DGDecode.dll")
                                source=mpeg2source("C:\TEMP\D2VAVS\V02.D2V",idct=7 )
                                left=source.script1()
                                right=source.script2()
                                width=left.width()/2
