    If the .ASF file is, in fact, somehow damaged, try downloading a program named "ASF Tools". It may provide you with the means of repairing the file.

    Let us know of your success ;>}

      Although VirtualDub 1.3c does support ASF files, it does a really crap job of it, and if the file was not perfectly made my Microsoft itself, then it won't be able to open it, which is another reason they took out ASF file support from 1.4 onwards.

      It sounds like you don't want to use TMPGenc, but it is the only other piece of software out there that supports the opening and conversion of ASF files, if you have a problem with it try downloading the latest version again. It does a good, quick job and is one of the best free AVI/ASF/MPG conversion programs around.

        I use Micro$oft's GraphEdit for a very easy way to convert asf/wmv files to DivX/AVI. Just open the file in GraphEdit (File->Render Media File). Replace the "Video Renderer" and the "Default DirectSound Device" with a "AVI Mux" and "File Writer" filter that points to a new AVI file. Both these filters are from the DirectShow category in the "Graph->Insert Filters" menu.
        Now press play and wait. Once the conversion is done, use the AVI file as input for VirtualDub or wathever you want to do with the file.

        Best regards,
        Reiner.
