The following MAY resolve your audio problem in TMPGEnc (and, perhaps, the filesize problem as well):

Under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab you increase the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

                Try the following under TMPGEnc:

Under the "Advanced" tab, select "Center (Keep aspect ratio)" and "16:9 Display" (or any 16:9 option available)...

The original .AVI probably was created with the top and bottom "black bars" cropped off (in order to reduce filesize). You could use VirtualDub to reestablish the bars - but this procedure includes compressing the video again, which will somewhat diminish the quality.

                    1) Load the .AVI into VirtualDub
                    2) Set "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
                    3) Set "Video" to "Full Processing Mode"
                    4) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and select the same codec and settings that were used for the original .AVI
                    5) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Filters"
                    6) Click on the "Add" radio button
                    7) Doubleclick on the "Resize" filter
                    8) Under "New width and height" enter the dimensions of your cropped video (e.g. 720x440)
                    9) Select "Precise bicubic"
                    10) Put a checkmark in "Expand frame and letterbox image"
                    11) Set "frame width" and "frame height" to the probable uncropped ORIGINAL dimensions (e.g. 720x480)
                    12) Click on "OK" (brings you back to primary "Filters" screen" and then click on "OK" (to get back to main VirtualDub screen)
                    13) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save AVI" and save with a NEW filename

Don't reencode it its a waste of time Here is the best way to have it come out letterboxed.

In TMPGEnc go to the advanced tab instead of selecting 16x9 select full screen keep aspect ratio then encode it your film will come out just like the orignal letterboxed

                      Enjoy

Are you saying anything different than what I first posted here? To wit:

                        "Try the following under TMPGEnc:
Under the "Advanced" tab, select "Center (Keep aspect ratio)" and "16:9 Display" (or any 16:9 option available)..."

yes setting it to center and 16:9 will leave gaps on both sides in alot of cases and center the video where as full screen keep aspect ratio will fill up the center and keep the original leterbox with no gaps on the side at all

But sorry for trying to help I'll go abck to doing what I have been doing for longer than most of you have been alive since I created a problem. Just ran across the forums to see what others were using today and thought I would lend a hand.

                          C ya
