You need to burn in the 1x to 8x range. Not as fast as your burner wil burn

      1) Use CD-R/Ws until you've resolved your problem

      2) Do the BURNED VCDs playback properly on your computer?

      3) Do you KNOW, for a fact, that your standalone DVD player will playback BURNED VCDs (NOT the same as commercial PRESSED VCDs)?

      4) have you tried different BRANDS of CD-Rs?

To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model standalone player, go to:

              "its a jvc xv5302"

There is no such JVC model. Do you mean XVS 5302?

What different brands of media have you tried?

Why so low with the burn speed? I'm using nero to do vcd, I burn at 24 -32 speed and get perfect cd's... I realise mileage may vary, I was just wondering if there's a 'special' reason?

EDIT - sorry meant for SKD_TECH

Try Nero Its the best program for burning vcd's

do i need to convert to mpeg 2
Only if you want to make a SVCD(Super Video CD)
You might want to do this later but TRy to get vcd's down first

Also do the videos play fine while on your computer?

I agree with SKD it might be a buffer underrun. Do you get any errors when you burn? And I would go ahead and try burning as a slow speed.

My copy of Nero does not support the Atapi CD-RW that I have, nor would the Roxio Easy CD Creator Basic 5.x (which was bundled with the Dell computer that I bought six months ago)allow burning to VCD. Can you suggest other programmes? Many thanks.

I would have to agree with the one that suggested using nero.
just go to the nero homepage and get the latest update. it will enable you to make vcd's. It will automatically convert all avi's and mpeg formats that i have tried at least into vcd for you. the encoding takes time, but i have not had one fail yet with it. i believe the latest version of nero is 5.5.10.35.

Also, as someone already mentioned. make sure your stand alone dvd player supports vcd's. Most do, but not all. especially if they are more than a year or so old.

                        Hope this helps.
