Burning to SVCD

This is my first attempt at copying a video.

I want to make a video that will play on my DVD at home. I have already tried this using an AVI file and Video Studio, which worked fine but now I have a DVD with I have ripped using smart ripper and now have a bunch of VOB files that I'm not sure what to do with.

Where do I go from here? I want to burn them unto a CD in SVCD format to play at home but Nero doesn't recognize the VOB files.

The simplest way is probably to use a program called "DVD2SVCD"...

You will need an mpeg-2 encoder such as CCE, Procoder, or TMPGenc to use wtih DVD2SVCD (DVD2SVCD basically automates and simplifies the svcd authoring process).

Thank you very much. I am just so confused. I just need to turn these VOB files into MPEG or AVI format so I can bring them into video studio since I only need selected clips. Thanks.

VOB files contain mpeg-2 streams. Most (medium to high end) commercial video editing should support direct vob input. You should check this out before doing any needless conversions. You may also want to see if create a d2v file may be helpful.

Many freeware software can "chop" (split) vob files into smaller segments.

When you create an svcd file, you are effectivly reducing the bitrate and resolution.

Perhaps if you search the doom9.org forum and read the guides you may come across methods of inputting vob files into NLE's.

Thank you for all of your help and suggestions but I think this is way beyond me. I used MovieJack Demo and ripped the movies to MPEG files, which I brought into Video Studio made small clips to be used in a bigger movie. Video Studio doesn't recognize VOB files. I think I will just look for an easier program, this one is way above my head. I read all of the help files but I still don't have a clue as to what to do. Thanks anyway, I appreciate the time you took to help me.

Virtualdubmod will recognize vob files in most cases.
Secondly, if all you want to do is cut certain parts out of vob files, and then rejoin them then it can be accomplished easily with freeware tools. I can provide you with more information if you like.
