problems playing VCD created by NERO

Hi,
I am trying to create my first VCD from downloaded MPEG file.
The file is 45MB (about 4.5 min.) and playes perfectly on the PC (MS Media
Player).

Tried to burn VCD by NERO 5.5.1.8 - it claimed the the MPEG is not in the right
format and suggested to correct it. I took the suggestion and after heavy
work by NERO it burned the CD.

When inserted to my stanalone DVD player (Toshiba SD-1300) it started to play
perfectlay (hi quality picture and sound) but after 20 - 30 seconds, the
picture freezes, but the sound continues.

Each time the freeze point is in a lightly different point, but allwais
after the first several seconds of the movie.

Any suggestions why I have this problem?

I'd suggest that you first convert the file to "MPEG1-VideoCD" format using TMPGEnc - and then use NERO only to burn the VCD.

I had a similar problem with a VCD I burned using Nero, but it was already in .mpg format from Studio DV. Is this STudio DV's fault, or the DVD player's fault?

a vcd is not just an mpeg...a the mpeg has to be in vcd format. read setarip's post above.

I got it to work last night. Played fine in both the PC and the TV, however, on the TV the quality of the picture was pretty poor (worse than VHS tape) Is this the size of the TV (big-screen, but not HDTV), or could it be the media (a well-used Sony CD-RW on which I'd done a number of quick erases in Nero)? Do you have any other suggestions?

I converted my .mpg file using TMPGEnc-2.50.32.120, and than used my NERO to burn it - and now it worked OK.

Actually, I did the same to the sample movie from TMPGEnc and burned that one as a second track. Both were played on my standalone DVD player.

The only thing I noticed is that while my downloaded file - though played correctly - didn't show time elapsed on the DVD player - time was --:-- .

The second track showed the time OK. Not a big problem, but I am curious to know why that could happen.
