miniDVD from nero 6
My jvc 302 dvd player would not recognise a nero miniDVD (cd burned like a short dvd), it reads as a silent cd. I copied a nero dvd diskimage VOB into a svcd compilation and it played in high resolution but at about 3 frames per second. Is there any way of getting better than svcd quality on cds or are dvdrs the only way? I suppose if it was easy everyone would be doing it already.

As I've posted elsewhere, it appears that standalone players capable of playing mini-DVDs are few and far between.

You might want to try "CVD" (Chinese Video Disk) format - essentially SVCD at (NTSC) 352x480 or (PAL) 352x576. The output on your television is, in my opinion, near-DVD quality... -

Thanks for the CVD suggestion, I will try it out. I also tried copying a hires mpeg into a nero svcd compilation and at 704x576x25 set at 2700/2500/800 the svcd played well on the jvc player but the higher resolution was not that obvious.Comment

I suppose so, otherwise I would use Svcd Pal resolution 480x576??!!Comment

I did a long search for cvd encoding but found nothing. Is it just a 704/2=352 vertical line mpeg2 file saved in a svcd compilation? If not could you please point me in the right direction.

Nope - 2,520kbps max
Apparently, the fact that the horizontal resolution is exactly 1/2 that of a DVD (and vertical is identical to DVD) results in higher quality image...
