burning problem

My problem with burning vcds is sometimes i get an unknown error which stuffs the the vcd up completly. i have a 8x dvd lite-on burner and i'm burning just a complimation of video clips i have downloaded. I have a mixture of avi and mpeg files.
the burning process consists of: encoding which it usually gets through ok and the burning. i think the problem may occur during the burning part, but I'm not sure. I am using nero to burn and sometimes "my dvd" which is a the software that comes with the burner.

does anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

First off I recommend a RW or two for experimentation.
I'd be careful of running other tasks while you burn.
I'm not familiar with VCD's but are you sure you can mix AVIs and MPEGs?
