WHy is my SVCD coming out squashed??

I've done the encoding in TMPEGEnc with the wizard and the SVCD PAL feature.

thing i noticed is it locks the frame size 480 width and 576 height.

shouldn't this be the opposite way around ??? cause my source avi at 720x576 looks perfect.

so why does MPEG2 condense it in an opposite way??

Also in TMPEGEnc i check the box for
    1:1 VGA and
    Full screen keep aspect ratio

as i saw in an older post but still the thing is squashed.

When i make a standard VCD you can see the pixel dimensions have a larger width of 320 of something and the vid comes out fine.
I just don't get why the MPEG2 VCD compresses in such a wierd way.

    thanks in advance

SVCD is intended for PROPER playback only on a television via a standalone DVD player. Don't judge the output based on how it plays back on your PC...

hmmm i don't have a dvd player so i can't actually check how it comes out on the tv but i've bought over SVCDs before and they play fine in my PC and it shows the opposite frame size.
ie width is 576 height 480.

Set your source aspect ratio check box for 720x576, keep aspect ratio 2, on the Advanced tab.
