non-svcd compilant mpeg-2 on cd?

Hi,

i just grapped this question from another forum. The task was to split a film (non-svcd compilant mpeg-2 which is dvd player compilant on two cds and run it on standalone dvd players. My only solution to it was to burn these plain files on cd. Have tried it with another film and works but y´loosing menu and stuff. So does anyone know of another way? What will happen if the SVCD mpeg file will be replaced for example by this mpeg-2 inside the menu? Are there any tricks to come by?

Allright then, for anybody who´s interested here´s the solution to this tricky problem:

1) you need Nero 6.6 and TMPGenc XPress+ac3 Plugin,

Hint: it would work also using NeroVision Express but because of bitrate limitation of 1691kbps a 90minutes film that output (arround 1,43Gigbytes) fits only closely onto two cds so i changed this guide to TMPGenc Xpress now. Ready for films with 90-120minutes running time...or more depending on bitrate encoding and quality.

2) here´s what you have to do
a) stream rip vob file (one single vob file) using either
dvddecrypter or dvdshrink
b) open and convert video files to 1/4d1 (low dvd
resolution) with bitrate 1300-1500kbps using
and audio to 224kbps using TMPGenc Xpress and split
film into two parts. If you like to keep dvd
resolution reduce bitrate and convert to full dvd, but
note that may not fit onto 2 cds then anymore!
c) encode and re-author dvd again
d) start Nero and open normal CD UDF session disc
!!not UDF/ ISO mixed!!
e) copy audio_ts and video_ts folder onto UDF session
disc
f) enable "dvd compatibility forced for Xbox" and choose
UDF v1.02 !!!Thanks to blutach *hug*!!!!
g) burn both dvd filmparts on cds.
DONE!

Now you can watch this dvd film on most of your modern hardware dvd player and also software player using cds.
But like allways !exception rulez! so try it before....

advantages compared to svcd:
- hardware dvd player compatibility
- ac3 digital sound
- full dvd menu and all dvd functions implementable

disadvantages compared to svcd:
- (*)lower resolution (for ex. 352/288 PAL) if burned on
2cds.

Why burning on cd and not dvd?
This method is meant for people who don´t have dvd burner and want to copy dvd to cds without encoding to divX, svcd or cd and like to keep quality and sound and don´t care of toasting lots of cds :lol:

The DVD spec for filesystems is UDF 1.02

Ohh thanks for the info. Thats because i found an info telling new dvd videos are using udf 2.01 filesystems. So what would you recommend?
Cause 2.01 is presently released version 2.01 from July 2002 by osta. So that would mean for older player use
v1.02 right? Or doesn´t it actually matter *confused*?

Anyhow the important part is to enable XBox DVD compatibility! Otherwise it won´t play in autorun mode!

Yes, older players use 1.02 and as you can see from the osta site, this is the version for DVD. AFAIK, all commercial DVDs have 1.02. If you want your disc to play in as many players as possible, use 1.02.

I can't help you about Xbox - I know nothing about them. But I could suggest that if they are a "compliant DVD player" then they WILL play a DVD with filesystem UDF 1.02.

I guess there's one other thing that should be mentioned.

Many many DVD Players don't really expect to find DVD stuff on a CD. If a player can't find a DVD, it will shift focus to see if it can read data at CD focus depth. It then figures that it's got a CD and goes into CD mode, usually looking for an audio CD/MP3/VCD etc. Many players won't look for DVD files.

This is a hit and miss thing and users of your method need only make 1 CD to find out if it works with their players.

Another factor to take into account is the speed differential. A player may not have the ability to spin a CD fast enough to stream DVD data. Again, a hit and miss thing and not a lot is wasted by experimenting.

Of course, if you want to play this on your PC drive, chances are very high that it will play.

Yes, that point nearly forced me to give up this idea but tried it yesterday the last time with udf (before tested miniDVD, ISO CD and faked vcd not worked) and hey it worked nicely on a one year old dvd player! I thought great, tricky and cool . But because the video will be encoded with low 1300kbps bitrates (1300kbps is really great!) i do believe it will work with most players. But as y´said....
