Beginner Needs Help

i have been previously encoding in DivX, but am interested in VCD (mpg1) format.

1) Whats special about Mpeg1 apart from you can play it on you DVD Player

2) What programs would i use to convert from DVD 2 VCD with good quality

MPEG1 compression has existed for longer than DivX and doesn't compress as much as does DivX (An MPEG1 or MPEG1-VideoCD will typically be approximately twice the filelength of a comparable .AVI).

What is "special" about MPEG1-VideoCD (NOT simply MPEG1) is that it is a "legal" format which is recognized by many standalone DVD players (and the less expensive Asian VCD players).
