I can successfully create a VCD with 3 .mpg files + a menu using Nero 5.5.8.0, which will play on my standalone DVD (Toshiba SD3750). The player only recognizes the video clips themselves, showing only 3 tracks present. I can't access the menu display. I can ID the menu file (.dat file in the Segment folder, correct?) and the clips (.dat files in the MPEGAV folder) using Windows Explorer. Is this simply a limitation of the Toshiba player, or do I need to do something more when making the VCD? BTW, this Toshiba player does not support SVCD.

I don't have a DVD drive, but I can play the video clips from my CD-ROM drive if I manually open the .dat files in the MPEGAV folder. But I cannot open the menu file (Item0001.dat?) in the SEGMENT folder with any player software (error: "not a valid A/V file"). My standalone apparently only sees the tracks in the MPEGAV folder, as those are the only ones it lists.Comment

I think you might have missed setarip's point. If after you create your CD, you should go to the File pulldown, and save as bla, bla. Once you've done that, get out of Nero just for the heck of it, and double click on the bla bla icon in Explorer, and it will open up in Nero for you again. Hit the play button on the buttom. If your menus show up then, that's the first step in knowing or not that the menus work correctly. If not, perhaps it's just the player.Comment

Yes, after compiling/burning the VCD, I can re-open the Nero file and "play" the menu file -- it comes up perfectly. I've tried fooling a bit with the settings on the "ISO" tab, but, as I suspected, this produced no difference. Apparently my standalone cannot "see" the Segment folder and its menu file. Damn.Comment

Thanks Ron. I just discovered this morning that I needed to change a setting with my Toshiba player in order to pull up the VCD menu (my bad...I've only had this DVD player for a couple of months). This enabling allows the playing of a menu for a PCB-featured VCD -- do you know what that stands for?
So now the VCD will start at the menu, and I can access/search for any track directly. And Return will bring me back. So that's all cool. Now, with VCDEasy installed, can I make a menu that's any more interactive, or is this about it for a VCD? This player doesn't support SVCD (according to a vcdhelp.com guide), so I know I can't get too elaborate, I guess.Comment
