VCD size....

I was reading an article on NickyGuides site on using TMPGenc and this is what he wrote...

"Remember, if you have a 650MB CD-R you can fit a 740MB VCD or SVCD on it. A 700MB CD-R will allow us to fit 820MB VCD's or SVCD on it."

I would like to know how? I read through his pages and found no answer. Any ideas would be a great help, thanx!!

Well, when you can fit a 740MB vcd on a 650MB cd-r/w, it means that you burn the vcd/svcd by TIME And usually, you can fit a 70min vcd on 650cd-r, which is about 740mb and a 35min svcd also on a 650cd-r, which is about 800mb. Thus, s/vcd's are burned according to the time of the clip, NOT the size

I looked on Nicky's site and couldn't see where you got it from, but he is right in some respect, it is possible to fit 730Mb on a 700Mb Cd, and that is because: when you burn a Data cd the Operation system needs some information to see that it i a Data CD, and this information is about 27Mb of size. The VideoCD format does not need this information and that is why you can fit 730Mb on a 700Mb Cd.

Don't ask me why Windows can read a VCD disk because I don't know.

It was under the "cutting/joining mpegs" section. Well I don't see how you would do this. If I try to burn that much data my LiteON will spill out the disk and say "BZZZZZT---NOT GONNA HAPPEN" Am I not understanding or doing something right?

When u say "data", im guessing you dont mean vcd or svcd , hence, you cant burn that much. It is only possible when talking about VIDEO and NOT data or music or video in .avi format. If you want to know how to burn a vcd, refer to the guides

Well I been burning VCD's for.....way to long. I just never heard of such a thing is all. Lets face it, 740MB on one disc is not gonna happen when ur talking raw form.

Simply to reinforce (not debate ;>}) previous statements in this thread, VCDs are processed in a fashion similar to audio CDs - that is to say, the capacity is based on TIME and NOT on megabytes per se. A conforming MPEG1-VCD of 74 minutes duration, which should approximate 740 megs, WILL fit on a 650 Meg/74 minute CD-R without necessitating overburning...

CDR's on their package are rated for mode-1. VCDs, SVCDs etc are recorded mode-2. A 74min/650meg (mode-1) CDR can hold about 740meg mode-2. A 80min/700meg (mode-1) CDR can hold about 800meg mode-2. You can add another 20-30 meg if you "overburn".
