    Extreme time encoding with DVD2SVCD?

I've been using DVD2SVCD for a short time now and I love the High Quality SVCDs that it makes, BUT! It takes about 40 hours to do a 2 hour movie. My system is a 1Gig processor with 512Meg of RAM and a 30Gig hard drive. I don't understand why it is taking so long? I've even used msconfig to turn off everything I can at boot up so that I'll have as much speed as possible.

I've read a lot of threads that talk about starting it before they go to bed and in the morning it is complete!! Is that truely possible?? Maybe they are running much fast systems?

That seems far too long for the system you've described.

    1) Have you defragmented your hard drive recently?

    2) Are you low on hard drive space?

I have defragmented my hard drive, but that did make me think of something. I have an external 120Gig, 7200rpm firewire drive that I've been using instead of my main hard drive. I guess I probably should try doing everything on my main hard drive and see if it's faster. If it is then I can just copy the completed files over to the external drive when finished. I've always felt that my external drive accessed as quick as my main drive did, but maybe that's it. What do you think??

        "What do you think??"

The only way to be certain is to perform a timed experiment comparing the two drives...

          setarip,

I think the problem is resolved. I haven't actually try DVD2SVCD again yet but wanted to do a conversion using GK. So, I started it at 6:00pm yesterday and it was done this morning when I got up. Well, the second pass was actually at 91% (almost complete).

I'm pretty sure that DVD2SVCD will work the same since I was having the long conversion times also with GK I just never actually let it run its full course before stopping it.

Thanks for your help here and on my other posts!!!

OK, I was wrong! GK only took 9.5 hours and looks really good. DVD2SVCD took 39 hours and looks great.

TMPGEnc is what is taking all of the time. I just can't figure out why it is processing so slowly? Well, if there is any other ideas out there please let me know.

Thanks for the help ahead of time!!

Make certain that "Motion search precision" (under the "Advanced" tab) is set to "Normal" and NOT "High" or "Highest"...

                  setarip,

I'll try that on the next one I do, but will it degrade the action scenes in movies like Blade 2?

                  Thanks again!!

I don't believe you'll notice any such degradation...

Motion search set to "highest" precision can significantly increase encoding time.

From what I have seen, in certain movies, the motion search option can impact quality.

CCE and possibly TMPGenc PLUS may improve encoding times.

                        setrip,

I'm in the process of doing another movie with DVD2SVCD so I'll let everyone know how it turns out with Motion Search set to Normal.

                        Thanks again!

                            setarip,

I've done two movies at this point, High Crimes and American Pie 2, and both of these movies took approximately 11 hours and without any noticable signs of degraded video. I'm going to try only a couple of chapters out of Blade 2 or The Matrix and see how some high action/motion scenes turn out.

Thanks again for your continued support. I've learned a tremendous amount for you and these forums!!!!
