i hate getting used to a new forum, but here goes:

Why VCDs may look bad on large display device?

assume you have one of the new DVD players that are designed
to fit in the palm of your hand --- that's about 18" or so from your
nose, looks pretty good, DVD or VCD.

now move the device farther away, say 3 feet, well now two people could view the movie, but you are beginning to wish that
your movie did not need to be shared (selfish I know).

now assume you have a futuristic wall display (covers the entire
wall as a display device). Wow, you say as you past by the wall,
then instinctively move farther away to see it properly. Maybe,
now you feel that the room needs to be larger, because yeh this
wall display is big enough for a big group of people to share a
    movie.

analysis: it is a personal thing, similiar to how close can a person
come to you before you feel they have entered your personal space, but most people who buy a big display device find out that
it needs to be viewed from farther away than the display device
that this new big one is replacing. That feeling may lead to a decision to build a special room of the perfect size for the new
    big (maybe 52" TV) display.

Why does VCD look bad on a 52" TV? the pixels are a lot bigger
on a big TV and you are probably a lot closer. Can anything be
done, some might tell you to switch to DVD and forget VCD, others
might suggest that you change your viewing distance from the TV.
Changing to DVD format or SVCD will improve the view by going to a higher quality use of the pixels on your big TV, changing your viewing distance while viewing VCD format movies will alter how
your eyes integrate the pixels (greater distance will make it seem
    less blocky perhaps).

    In any case, enjoy!
