    Avi but it is not???!!

    hi
i'm new to this board, and i was trying from a long time to solve a problem but till now i couldn't figure it out,

    1) i'm trying to use TMPGEnc to convert from avi format to vcd format, when i choose the video source and pic a file, it tells me that "the file can not open, or unsupported." eventhough the file extension is .avi!!!! is there a way to fix this problem?

    2) and is there a website that explains how to convert from .avi to vcd? like a specific instruction, becasue i went nuts trying to do it and i couldn't....

    thanks in advance

First of all can you actually play the avi file?

In either case, post the "File information" from virtualdub.

If you want instructions on vcd authoring search this forum.

          VCD Authoring

Just thought i would add, if you are using nero burning rom 5.5.9.0 or higher, it will autoencode avi files to mpeg4 (vcd) for you and burn it. It is the simplest way i have found for encoding avi ---> vcd

But that ain't the best way...
and....."avi files to mpeg4 (vcd)" VCD is NOT MPEG-4

              look what i did
              1) i used VirtualDub to change the file extension to .avi
              2) i used TMPGEnc to convert it to .MPEG format
              3) i burn it to a CD as a drag and drop to my burner, it didn't work on the dvd player,

then i tried to use roxio to create a VCD it was going to take fo ever to burn, so i stopped it and tried Nero, as it got to 6% it told me that it can't and gave me an error, and this is the error

"how long does it take to convert from .avi to mpeg?? "

It depends on the length of the movie, the speed of your machine, and the quality settings that you choose for conversion.

Now that you have VirtualDub installed, why don't you do what was suggested to you previously (by young batman, I believe):

                      1) Load the file into VirtualDub

                      2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

                      3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

I think your problem lies in the frames per second of your movie. Me, and in fact several other users have had a similar problem trying to encode to mpeg format when the movie had a low fps. I found the solution for it to be to re-encode your movie in VirtualDub (the guide can be found here). If any other user has a better way to make the file be able to convert, then please post so.

Unless I've completely missed the boat (since I don't use DivX v.5.xx) and something has changed recently, it is possible that TMPGEnc presently still doesn't support DivX v.5.02. If this is, in fact, the case, do the following tro convert your file to compression by a different video codec:

                            1) Load the .AVI into VirtualDub

                            2) Set "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"

                            3) Set "Video" to "Full Processing Mode"

                            4) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, click on "Compression"

                            5) Select the codec that you want to change TO - If possible, set the adjustable settings to the same as the original file

                            6) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and enter a new filename for the modified file

                              To gd_nimrod

I have successfully converted "more than a few" 14.985Fps DivX-compressed .AVIs to MPEG1 and MPEG1-VideoCD format, using TMPGEnc, without difficulty. TMPGEnc automatically doubles the "decimated-by-2" framerate internally back to 29.97Fps...
