how does one convert an avi to svcd/vcd? is there a difference between svcd and vcd?

Just to let you know, i was also confused when i started making s/vcd's, and the main obvious difference between both is the quality. However you will see that even a vcd on a tv screen will look pretty damn good. You should always experiment though with different video bitrates for the svcd, remember more video bitrate = bigger file, and vice-versa.

ok i made a kvcd, now how do i change the resolution so that the picture is not squished horizontal?

my vcd sound is off like really bad. but the avi has perfect sound synch... odd, does this have anything to do with the encoding? and how can this be prevented next time so i dont waste 1.5hr...

Mess around with the aspect ratios. If you have a widescreen movie, select 16:9 aspect ratio, then in "other settings" go in advanced and in the "video arrange method" select "full screen (keep aspect ratio)".
