    TMPG 24+ Hrs to encode!!

Hello I'm sorry if this has been answered before but I cant seem to find it if it has.

I am encoding Unbreakable (PAL) from DVD to SVCD using TMPG and DVD2SVCD.

The movie is about 1hr 42 mins and I am using the exact setting that is shown on this guide:

digital, digest, dvd, divx, dvdr, dvd+r, dvd-r, rip, copy, ripping, convert, backup, back, up, shrink, xvid, software, download, news, guide, article

My computer is a PIII 733 with 256 megs of ram.

Should it take over 24hrs?? Should I try and changing some settings?

    Thank you!!!

(I just checked and its 29 hrs) Also it seems to have gone over the movie twice now?!?

I see that the motion search presicion is set to "Highest Quality (Very Slow)". Thats why it is taking so long to encode the file. If you set it to normal or even "Motion Search Precision" the quality will still be good and it should take you less than 12 hours based on your machine.

13 hours, that sounds reasonable. Tip: When you get familiar to the whole process, its best to start encoding, go to bed, then wake up with a nice DivX movie waiting for you

HaHaHa well I meant 13 hrs left of the original encoding.

Its not far off now! I agree it should be done overnight and i started it about 24hrs ago on my other computer.

How do SVCD's tend to look on compatible DVD players do you know? I'm saving to buy a decent one at the mo which is multiregion/MP3/SVCD.

Next time i do it I wont use the very slow extra HQ mode.

"How do SVCD's tend to look on compatible DVD players do you know?"

Depending on the video bitrate, they look pretty damn good. Even if you see it on your monitor, you see the (good) difference. On tv's, since the resolution is lower, the image should be sharper and look even nicer than on pc.

"I'm saving to buy a decent one at the mo which is multiregion/MP3/SVCD. "

Many dvd's play vcd, but svcd is rarer. JVC's are very good and play everything.

"Next time i do it I wont use the very slow extra HQ mode."...

...and so it will take you less time

Wow incredibly impressed the resultant quality is outstanding! Much better than any DivX I've tried to make and playable on standalones!!

              Just a shame its on 2 cd's.

Cheers for the help. (I had 25Mb left of hard disk at teh end!! HaHa)

Indeed, but remember that its mpeg video is not an compressible as DivX video.

                Glad to
