Hi folks, I'm a newbie to all this. I have a compaq presario 5888 (700 mHz), Phillips DVD (4x speed), Windows 98 SE. Last night I tried my very first 'ripping' job of Jurassic Park III using CladMdec 1.5, DVD2AVI v1.82, and TMPGEnc v2.50. I followed the VOB to VCD guide at CloneAD's website(clonead.cjb.net) exactly. At the very end of the process, after using TMPGEnc to convert my "WAV" and "D2V" project file to a VCD compliant MPEG-1 file, I only got about two minutes' worth of encoded MPEG-1 "movie". It only took about two minutes to encode using TMPGEnc v2.50. The guide states that it should take a "few" hours to encode. The step prior to this was using DVD2AVI v1.82 to edit my .VOB 'file list'. QUESTION 1: What did I do or not do to only get two minutes worth of MPEG-1 file ? Did I forgot to 'select' all the VOB files ? QUESTION 2: What is the difference between SmartRipper v2.40(1) and CladMdec v1.50 ?
NEED help with CladMdec, DVD2AVI,TMPGEnc question...!!

YOU NEED SOME HELP
Reponse From: TKHANG
Hi, first of all I want to thank you for responding to my question. I believe I loaded all the VOB files when running the DVD2AVI program. I was able to see that there are about four VOB files, with names like T01P00_0.vob to T01P00_3.vob. The guide stated that I should select the first VOB file, which is the T01P00_0.VOB, and click "OPEN". When I did this I got a "FILE LIST". This "FILE LIST" also contain four files. I then click OK and it takes me back to the main menu. After pressing F5 key, the movie starts to play. Using the frame selector I'm able to scroll from beginning of movie to the end. At this point I know I extracted correctly all the VOB files from the movie. The next couple of steps involve adjusting the aspect ratio and 'Clip & Resize' operations, which I did. The guide stated that don't delete the original VOB files just yet as they are still needed. I then use TMPGEnc to convert the 'WAV' and 'DV2' project file craeted earlier with DV2AVI and convert it to a VCD compliant MPEG-1 file. After entering all the necessary settings for TMPGEnc, I then select an output file for the MPEG-1 file, which I did. After this, I clicked 'START' and it does the conversion. At this point I notice that the 'time remaining' is only about two minutes long. The guide states at this point that it should take a "few" hours for the conversion. But with mine, it took only two minutes !! At this point I'm totally LOST !! I don't know if I'm suppose to go back and select the other three remaining VOB file in the 'FILE LIST' under the first T01P00_0.VOB and let DVD2AVI do its thing. Again, I'm reminded that the guide states that I should not delete the original VOB files because it's still need, BUT it does not mention anywhere else what to do with it. Anyway at the very end of the guide, it ask me to perform the 'MERGE & CUT' operation, but I can't because my MPEG-1 file is not that long !! I only have about two minutes worth of "movie". I thank you for taking the time to read this and response !! Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. -TKHANG

The easiest way to get a conversion that I have found would be to follow the instructions at http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/ezdvd2vcd/step_1.html
You can use any of the ripping programs that you choose and then follow the directions. As a note when you get to each step you will need to open the correct program and than follow instructions. I have found that this format is the best and gives a great quality rip. You will find very minor pixel glitches in the movie while playing in the standalone DVD player but with time the programs will get better. A note to you, I use Clad (Not CladMdec) for my ripping. Once you have entered the settings into the program the first time you should only need to check each setting prior to continuing to the next step during the next movie rip. This will just confirm that nothing has changed or become unchecked.
Try this out and let me know how it goes. Bye this time tomorrow you should be on or completed the (3rd) step, if not already burned.

The programs you will need are; Ripper (Smart Ripper, Clad or DVD Decrypter, Etc), DVD2AVI, TMPGEnc and Nero.

Guess what Dan ? Using ezdvd2vcd like you said, I was able to finally rip a dvd movie last night! I have to say, ezdvd2vcd is probably the easier "newbie" instructions out there. In fact I emailed them to thank them for such a great product. Although it took me about 12 hours for the whole process, I'm happy to know I was able to do it. A couple quick questions, can I play these two vcd "movies" on my stand-alone DVD player ? I tried it on my Playstation 2 and it did not work. I wonder if it will work on a regular DVD player. What else ,if any thing, do I need to do to make it play on a regular DVD player ? Also at the very last step of Nero burning, the Finalize CD option was greyed out for some reason. Could this have cause the vcds to not be able to play ? Lastly, thanks for your help !!Comment
