TMPGEnc- can not open or unsupported

When i try to convert a file it wont let me open some AVI files.
I installed the plugin.
Is there anyway around this?
If now what do i use?
i tried the avi2mpg program but my computer freezes after it converts the file for like a minute or two.
I have windows XP so it might be a XP problem.
Please i need help.

1) Did you create the .AVIs, or did you download them?

2) Do you know what video codec was used to create the .AVI?

3) Do you know what audio codec was used?

4) If the .AVI contains an audio stream in .AC3 format, you'll have to extract the audio and convert it to (simplest) an Uncompressed .WAV file.

The same thing happened to me until I installed tsumani encoder.
Must have had some codecs that my comp didnt have I think.
Anyway after I installed it, tmpgen then accepted the avis.
